**** Mild spoiler warning below for cdrama endings below!!!!!****

...

I dunno. Of course there are always open endings in media, but it seems like there's been more of them lately? I don't watch every single cdrama that gets buzz, but in the past couple years or so, the open ended happy but only because vague reincarnation ones have been:

Love Between Fairy and Devil
The Starry Love
Back from the Brink

Bittersweet:

Who Rules the World
Novoland: Pearl Eclipse

Cliffhanger:

My Journey to You
Joy of Life (but at least they're now getting season 2)

No wait they're alive!:

Word of Honor
Blood of Youth
Mysterious Lotus Casebook (maybe, ambiguous)

I'm sure I'm missing some, though.

This doesn't seem excessive to me tbh? The wuxia and xianxia shows are the ones that often have bittersweet or outright unhappy endings, it's kind of a staple of the genre. Hell even the historical ones often end up pretty bittersweet, it's what's expected of those shows. There are a few that are cute with little angst, but they're not the most common type, and in the 90's and 00's it was unusual to get even that. Angst and blood is the genre must. xD

And idk about the other two in the last three but I know that WoH was an adapted BL, so that would explain the cut off ending in order to skirt censorship, which is shitty but not something those who make these shows can control so I can forgive that. Also given the endings of most C-BL's it's fairly standard without the cut-off ending, most of them have tragic endings to 'justify' the BL nature of the shows.

I was gonna say, if you're looking for happy endings, wuxia and xianxia are not the genres for you.

Ehhh, maybe it's just me. I could take bittersweet if it didn't also come with "episode behind a paywall", I suppose. The ones that could go either way are annoying, though. I understand the need for ambiguity in BL, hence the end of The Untamed (which wasn't behind a paywall and IMO, a good happy ending) but the ending of Word of Honor feels way too abrupt and almost nonsensical without the extra scene. It'd be nice if it at least made sense and felt like a proper ending.

For Blood of Youth, I don't know the story behind it, but a well-liked character had a rather dramatic death in the show, and the extra episode was a "surprise, he's alive!" but in a really tacked-on, afterthought kind of way. Like, I'm glad he's alive, but that felt really cheap.
