There have always been fic writers who get precious about comments (see Ye Olde "next chapter only after I get 25 reviews!!" FFN Days), and readers with entitlement issues about 'their' getting fic delivered on demand, but I do think you're right that it's gotten much worse, or at least much more shameless, in recent years.

Might have something to do with the shift towards words like 'content' and 'engagement' rather than 'fic' or 'art' or 'fanworks'. Really buys into the whole creation-as-commercial shtick that's being force-fed across basically the entire internet at this point.

I hate it.

Honestly, the easiest thing to do is just... not care about the bitter conversations on either side of things. Write when you want, update what you want, comment where you want. Fandom is supposed to be fun. Why bog it down with unfun things?

The bitterness and petty behavior has always been there, but as with a lot of old fandom issues it was on a much smaller scale because the number of people casually online was a lot less than today. So you'd get like a fandom BNF getting snotty about 'not enough' people reading their fic, and on the other side the people who were annoyed at those BNF's withholding fic they wanted to read.

But now with more people those attitudes are more widespread because fandom numbers have increased. I think this along with the culture shift of social media has made fandom even more focused on the numbers their fanwork does instead of focusing on the hobby part of it first. Never mind the added issue of hustle culture where hobbies are to be monetized or you're failing somehow only adds to this very weird environment online where everyone feels like everyone else owes them something(but they owe others nothing).

I don't know if it will change or shift, but atm I just steer clear of either 'side' and keep to myself because everything about modern fic-culture in fandom is offputting to me as both a reader and a writer.

May I have a little rant? I try to leave decent comments on anything I finish so I leave a lot of comments, and I like it! Because I like the community part of fandom.

But it grinds my gears when people beg / demand comments and literally never comment on other people’s fanfic. Be the change people.

Honestly I never notice this shit unless I see authors notes about it or secrets posted here. I write fic and post it. That’s the end of my engagement with my work. I read fic and leave kudos if I think they did a great job. That’s the end of my engagement with other authors’ work. I don’t have the time or energy for silly little mind games about fic. And it’s rare I see it because I nope out of low quality fic and this behavior is rare with high quality fic.

Lmao same. It's a hobby, not a job. I'm not letting it be another source of stress in my life when I'm doing it to /relieve/ stress.

By this point in my life, I'm fine posting my fics and that's it. If I get Kudos or Hits or Comments, cool. If no one else reads it, oh well. At least I scratched an itch and knowing myself I'll be reading it.

I'm just thankful to get any comments. But yeah, I remember back when i started writing fic back 20 years ago, there was almost always someone going "I won't update until I have x amounts of reviews!" and it always killed my interest to a degree in reading any further, lol. I don't even pay attention anymore really.
