I mostly prefer fanfics for fandoms I do not particularly care about. Maybe this fandoms tend to attract better fanfiction, or maybe I have lower standards for fandoms I do not exactly love, I don't know. But this is highly frustrating.

I am the same way, but I know why, it's because I'm way less picky about people being OOC in fanfic if I don't care about their IC version. (If I care about their canon version I get extremely picky about ooc in fanfic.)

Hmm, I'm onboard with this, but more wrt characterization than aesthetics. Like, I'd rather have a robot that looks 100% human but has a personality that's heavily informed by them being an artificial intelligence, than one that acts like just some guy in a fancy robot costume.

yeah I feel this. like, I'm super tired of robots/AI being super emotional and human despite narrative claiming oh they're so robot wow when will they ever become human.

The Orville did it best with Isaac, but still erred a smidge too much toward him actually having a feeling versus logically using the stimulus/response in fleshy beings to provide a positive rather than negative outcome. I have always loved TNG but they super did not understand how a humanoid android should have responded to literally everything. I love Brent Spiner but the whole narrative around Data was flawed from the get-go. Seth McFarlane was clearly trying to fix that with Isaac and did pretty well, if not perfect.

So... C3PO, then?

Yeah. Once I started learning programming, I started seeing how INCREDIBLY far from even a passable imitation of human emotion robots are, much less actual sentience, so the robots-with-human-feelings trope--which EVERY fictional robot seems to fall into--has started getting a little annoying to me. Anyway, if they're just humans with robot innards, why not just make the character ... human? I don't get it.

Yes, but a lot of comics were like that in the 80s without even the toy tie-ins! You could have swapped this for an X-Men panel written by Claremont (where everyone introduces themselves and what they do) without hesitation. This is an extreme example, but it's far from the only one, and not necessarily to do with sales.

Are you sure it's only one person doing it? Feel like people are overly inclined to attribute all the comments on a given topic that annoy them to one troll, when more often there are just multiple people with similar takes.
I could be wrong though, I'm not sure I've seen whatever behavior this is referring to, so idk.

There have always been fic writers who get precious about comments (see Ye Olde "next chapter only after I get 25 reviews!!" FFN Days), and readers with entitlement issues about 'their' getting fic delivered on demand, but I do think you're right that it's gotten much worse, or at least much more shameless, in recent years.

Might have something to do with the shift towards words like 'content' and 'engagement' rather than 'fic' or 'art' or 'fanworks'. Really buys into the whole creation-as-commercial shtick that's being force-fed across basically the entire internet at this point.
