I agree. People respond to these situations as best they know how, even if it's awkward and wrong. Maybe the person found that posting a happy gif worked well in a lot of sad situations, so they thought it mmight also work this time. I have had quite a few times of telling someone thanks, but that really isn't helpful for me, and their reaction has been oh, sorry, and mine has been it's okay, thanks for understanding. I don't hold a grudge if someone earnestly tried but I'm the one person who doesn't like that expression of support. It's not their fault, they can't read minds, and it's on me to manage my emotional response. As long as we communicate and clear the air, no harm no foul.

This. I would never be mad at someone whose heart was in the right place, even if the expression of support they chose wasn't one that worked for me.

OP: I wouldn't have been mad neither if was a gif of the character hugging someone, but dancing while celebrating something it wasn't going to happen because he wanted so? No, no, no.
