What things do people spend huge amounts on money on that you find incomprehensible?

Watching a video on expensive toasters. I cannot imagine how much toast you need to be eating to spend more than $40 on a toaster.

Rolexes. Or any crazy expensive watch, I guess. It's purely a status symbol thing, which I find obnoxious as hell.

Purses. I love a good purse myself but there's plenty of pretty ones for under 100 dollars, which is my personal max limit. I cannot fathom spending thousands on a bag. No matter how awesome it is.

Anything where the increase in price isn't matched by a corresponding increase in quality. If I spend hundreds or (if I had that kind of money) thousands on something, it better be "drop bomb on it, still works" durable and also aesthetically pleasing.

Smart appliances, houses, etc. If they were purely an accessibility aid and not mostly an easy failure point + way to collect and sell user data, they'd be useful, but as they are I'd pay way more for a washing machine/fridge/whatever that doesn't need software updates and won't stop working if the internet does (I don't have internet access except for my phone, so anything that requires a connection to work is extra bullshit.)

Cars: No way am I spending enough money for a down payment on a fucking HOUSE (or the WHOLE payment of a house if you're in the plains) when a Honda is right there.

Clothes/purses/shoes/accessories: Like, yes, spend extra for the quality, but I keep seeing the ugliest, cheapest looking pants for $800. Like... why???

Organic foods: They're not organic, it's a marketing trick. Also GMOs are great; GMO companies suck.

wedding gowns. An incredibly expensive dress you can only wear once. And don't assume they're going to pass it on to a daughter who hasn't been born yet, what if they have a daughter who's not the same size? Or never gets married? Or if they only have sons?

I have a $300 toaster, but it pops down automatically and it's very pretty and matches my red blender? Why are you dying on this hill?

A good toaster is nothing to sneeze at. The industrial grade ones are fabulous.

I will never waste money on an expensive phone ever again, absolutely not worth it.

Shoes. I try to get it but I just don’t.

Agree with a lot of the other comments. Adding "luxury/expensive food or drinks". Like, hundreds of dollars for a bottle of Whisky. You drink it and then it's gone. Expensive appliances at least last for a decade or two.

If I had unlimited funds I would buy that Mitsubishi 1 slice toaster. I hate fighting with cheap toasters that cook unevenly so one side is burning while the other side is still bread or spit out toast that is so dry and dusty it's almost inedible. Give me that perfect slice with no effort every day of the week.

Gambling.

I'd rather spend my money on something other than the unlikely possibility that I might win something.

Ugh.
Misfire.

What was the last thing you DNF'd?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-08 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Tried reading Out by Natsuo Kirino. Only got a couple chapters in.

Love Will Tear Us Apart (Stranger Times 3) although I did try to give it another go yesterday. There seems to be a trend with urban fantasy to write one enjoyable book with an interesting dynamic between the characters and a fun setting, then make sure to split the group up and change the setting for every subsequent novel in the series. In the case of Stranger Times, the author isn’t a strong enough writer and the characters aren’t compelling enough to survive that change.

Attack on Titan. I watched a third of the show and never enjoyed it.

An anime called Ya Boy Kongming, about the strategist from Chinese history being sent to modern day Tokyo. DNF'ed when the main character wasn't even him but an insufferable wannabe idol who we're supposed to believe is struggling to get recognized even though she looks and sings exactly like every other real and fictional popular idol.

Deadloch

It’s just not for me. The characters’ incompetence is supposed to be funny, but I just find it infuriating.

Witch King, by Martha Wells. Several of my friends raved about it but I just felt so lost, and if it hadn't hooked me by the halfway point it was never going to. *shrug*

Red, White, & Royal Blue, the movie. I noped out after less than ten minutes.

I read the book in preparation for watching the movie, and I liked the book quite a bit. I didn't LOVE it the way a lot of people do, but I thought it was charming and snappy and well-written. I don't know why I thought the movie was going to be good, but for some reason I did.

Now obviously I can't say for certain that the movie was bad, having noped out after less than ten minutes. But nothing about that first nine minutes felt like it captured any of the things that made the book good, that's for sure. :(

Buccaneer (e)Books 🏴‍☠️

(Anonymous) 2023-10-09 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone have a non torrent source for ebooks? There are two books I have in paperback that I want ebooks for but they’ve never been released in my country. I think the last time I pirates something was when megaupload reigned supreme and I have no idea how to go about it anymore.
