Re: What things do people spend huge amounts on money on that you find incomprehensible?
(Anonymous) 2023-10-08 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)Smart appliances, houses, etc. If they were purely an accessibility aid and not mostly an easy failure point + way to collect and sell user data, they'd be useful, but as they are I'd pay way more for a washing machine/fridge/whatever that doesn't need software updates and won't stop working if the internet does (I don't have internet access except for my phone, so anything that requires a connection to work is extra bullshit.)

(Anonymous) 2023-10-09 02:00 am (UTC)(link)I went too off the line on something recently because it was worth it. And for something else I went with the cheap no-name thing because it was better quality and MUCH better value than the biggest name stuff.
We don’t have any smart appliances. We don’t have a doorbell camera, either. The closest we come to any of that stuff is a keypad garage remote mounted on the outside. The one that came with it died in 18 months so I spent $7 on Amazon for a generic one and after three years none of the connections have eroded like on the name brand one that cost $40 to replace.
