wedding gowns. An incredibly expensive dress you can only wear once. And don't assume they're going to pass it on to a daughter who hasn't been born yet, what if they have a daughter who's not the same size? Or never gets married? Or if they only have sons?

Yes. Weddings in general, really. It is one day. I'd rather have a fun honeymoon and/or save money for the actual marriage.

Agreed. I mean, there's nothing wrong with pretending you're a princess, but I'd rather do that at a costume party than at an event that potentially costs tens of thousands of dollars.

Oh man THIS! We skipped our wedding entirely. Everyone had all these crazy demands and it got stressful and no one cared what we wanted. If we’d done what we wanted to do, it would have cost us a grand total of like $300 before catering. But the parents were all making demands and we had a death in my family in the midst of it all and it was just too much stress. So we just said fuck it. Best decision of our lives!

We had our wedding in the caldera of an extinct volcano which happens to be in a public park right across the street from our house. We had the bare legal minimum of guests (3) and I wore a dress I got from Macy's for $30. Our biggest expense was the gourmet cupcakes we got our two witnesses and officiant, if you don't count the license itself.

Eh, it definitely sounds romantic, but there's also a basketball court in that caldera, so we were right next to that, lol. Thankfully no one was playing basketball when we were there.

Or maybe the daughter wants to choose her own wedding dress in a current style? (And why shouldn't she? Why did mom get to choose for her wedding and daughter doesnt?)

exactly! My sister and my niece both had wedding gowns that looked gorgeous but they were in very different styles.
