I've always thought my partner was a sloppy driver, and it was cemented when my dad (who has been driving for 40+ years and used to do it as a job) confided that he feels uneasy whenever my partner drives me anywhere. He says he's not technically bad, but very inattentive, lazy and just isn't alert enough. We've had several near misses that he's blamed on the other driver, but I'm 90% sure was just him letting his mind wander. It just feels like he doesn't take it seriously and laughs it off whenever I grill him for it.
