Terrible drivers

(Anonymous) 2023-10-11 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Why do so many people act like there is no one else on the road? No turn signals, running red lights, crossing three lanes to an exit, using phones while driving, etc.

Just, you are risking your own life as well as everyone else's. Even if no one but you matters, you are still endangering yourself. Why are people so stupid?

Main Character Syndrome. They think nothing THAT bad can ever happen to them, because they're the main character of their life.

If you’re talking about the US, it’s because the vast majority of people must drive everywhere for absolutely every aspect of their lives. So licenses are granted based on the potential to eventually become a driver who won’t be a risk on the road. This isn’t a theory, btw. This is the actual policy for most and possibly all states when issuing licenses. It’s also part of why retesting has been phased out and few if any states require new residents to take the written portion as part of changing their license over from their previous state.

My dad is one of these people and his reasoning is that nobody's gonna pull him over for it so it's fine. It's a very selfish, entitled mindset, but he's a retired white man so it's also not *wrong*. He's been in minor accidents and he's never been found at-fault, so he hasn't learned any lessons for his actions in his life.

I think driving is so normalized that people forget it can be really dangerous. I drive up the side of a mountain every day to get to work. The road has two lanes and I’ve lost count of the number of accidents I’ve seen because people illegally pass other cars or they speed around sharp turns. They used to have signs on the road warning people not to pass unless otherwise indicated, but the signs lasted less than a week before someone plowed through them.

I have a friend who doesn’t use turn signals on the freeway. Her excuse is that other cars speed up when they see her use a turn signal. And they do, but honestly, I’d rather be safe and use my turn signal than be unpredictable and somehow cause an accident.

My mom never used her turn signal. I hate having to ride any place with her because she is also a nervous passenger.

I've always thought my partner was a sloppy driver, and it was cemented when my dad (who has been driving for 40+ years and used to do it as a job) confided that he feels uneasy whenever my partner drives me anywhere. He says he's not technically bad, but very inattentive, lazy and just isn't alert enough. We've had several near misses that he's blamed on the other driver, but I'm 90% sure was just him letting his mind wander. It just feels like he doesn't take it seriously and laughs it off whenever I grill him for it.
