Omega/alpha?

Most of the time no, but for a few ships I do because my brain just really, really wants to see one half get railed over the other. It's purely shallow: if I find one more attractive I'll want to read about them getting wrecked.

Omega/Alpha would only be a preference if I had a top/bottom one already, if not then no, I wouldn't care.

Penetrated= wrecked?

My current OTP is two men, and I do actually prefer fics where Guy A tops and Guy B bottoms solely because *I* think it's hot. However, I think in canon they would switch on-and-off, and since 99.9% of fandom writes Top!A/Bottom!B I do make an effort to write Bottom!A/Top!B fics, or to at least mention in the story that Guy B is bottoming this time and he'll top later under different circumstances.

(Bizarrely, same ship, but I only like Alpha!A/Omega!B because I think it fits their personalities better. I have read one or two decent Omega!A/Alpha!B stories, though.)

I don't have a hard preference but I have soft ones where I find one way hotter.

For me it's not a preference so much as a "this is how I see the dynamic going between these two characters." Like for one of my ships, I think they absolutely switch all the time. But for another one? I just can't see it as anything other than A topping/B bottoming just based on their personalities and the way they interact with each other.

Not really. I have preferences about Dom/sub roles, though. I just don't really like equating that to penetration roles, or thinking a certain personality type is more likely to be a penetrator or get penetrated. D/s seems more obviously connected to a person's personality.

I'm not into A/B/O.

Only for a couple characters. I have more preferences regarding dom/sub (don't do ABO).

Almost never.

I have a strong preference for switching personally, regardless of the pairing, but I will sometimes form a top/bottom or dom/sub or alpha/omega preference for a ship based on which orientation tends to be better-characterized by writers in the fandom (i.e., which is written in a way that's more in line with canon) if one orientation is written markedly better than the other by most.

The strongest example I can think of is narusasu. There are... some good sasunaru writers out there, to be sure, but like... yeah nah narusasu is overwhelmingly closer to canon the way the vast majority of fans do it.

My preference is almost always that everyone is a versatile, lmao. Like I specifically wanna see them trade roles.

I've been chewing this over for way too many minutes.

So, sometimes I do. Is it about character dynamic? I initially thought so, but thinking about it more, it's not; it's about my mental state.

Characters I've had set for years as top or bottom can suddenly switch, due solely to where I'm at in life. Characterization plays a role, but I can massage the characterization plenty well to match my mood.

I guess this is a really drawn out way of saying, "no."

Generally only when I (bottom) am projecting onto one of them / imagining getting fucked by the other one.
I don't read much ABO so idk about that.
I definitely have preferences wrt d/s roles though. Most often either all femdom in het ships or I specifically want it to be switchy.

No, but I tend to have strong ones about dom/sub, especially for my OTPs.

Also, if someone else is pushy, whiny, entitled and/or demanding about how everyone should do things their way, the more likely I am to develop strong preferences for the opposite.

Yeah, Pretty strong ones too. I backed out of fics where it went against my preference. That said, It's just preference, I think this way is hot not that this is the "only right way" to do things or whatever.

I have top/bottom preferences to varying degrees, based on the ship, but they're not as ironclad as my D/s preferences or A/O preferences.

OTP 1: Started out with absolutely NO preferences, felt like they could switch all day long, had some people be SO obnoxious saying NO, ONLY top A/bottom B that I now exclusively write sub bottom A. (depending on source/adaptation, I think you could make your arguments for them switching it up, there are three adaptations in different media from the original which have different vibes, but like... now I don't write *any* version of them with A topping or Domming). Have read some A/B/O fic with omega A but omegaverse isn't as compelling for them as for some other ships, for me.

OTP 2: Prefer A as the Dom/top/alpha, but like... in A/B/O fics I think he's very *soft*, and a lot of his being dominant is just a reaction to B, who wants/needs that from someone who actually loves him and will take care of him. B has canon sub tendencies, and also canon Feelings About Motherhood that would lend towards the omega part. Wanting to see him bottom is just me, but I mean I think he'd like it. With alpha/omega and D/s I'm very set, with top/bottom I can see A bottoming and just getting different things out of it rather than bottoming and having his life changed.

OTP 3: Prefer A as the Dom/*bottom*/alpha. I think with BDSM there are kinks he'd be submissive for and he'd be open about liking them, but would think of himself as a Dom who likes bratting or receiving the odd spanking for sensory reasons, more than he thinks of himself as someone who likes both sides equally. His body language (and language-language) SCREAMS 'guy who wants a bigger, buffer, hairy, masc guy to rail him'. B is super masc in a way that I really *like* to see in an omega, and I hate when A/B/O fic robs him of that to make him a femme little princess.

OTP 4: I think they try EVERYTHING together but I think A is more submissive-- for him, domming is something he does to give his partner a turn to let go and enjoy submission, rather than something that also puts him into a heightened headspace. He still enjoys it, but like... his two natural settings are 'spoiled brat with Demands' and 'pathological need to be so good for an authority figure', both of which lend themselves to submission. Luckily I do like him as an omega bc they're my rare pair on this list and the *only* A/B/O fic for them casts him as such.

I prefer it when the one I like more is the sub, the bottom, or the omega. It doesn't have to be all of the above, but preferably at least one if it's applicable.

There is one exception: I love dommes. So if my fav is a lady I would prefer her to be in charge.

Yeah, I have fairly strong top/bottom (and Dom/sub, and alpha/omega) preferences for most of my ships. I generally headcanon them as switching top/bottom roles occasionally, but not that often.

Almost all of my ships have some degree of informal D/s dynamic, and for me personally that correlates to a top/bottom dynamic as well.

There's no hard and fast rule for why I prefer a character to Dom or to sub. In some cases it's about balancing the dynamic between the characters in some way, while in other cases it's about leaning into the pairing's slanted dynamic. The specific reasons for the preference really vary from ship to ship.

I forget it's even a thing until there's discourse about it, or if I read a ton of fics and notice that the fandom only ever writes it one way, in which case I just start wanting some variety.

Yeah, often enough I have preferences. But this preference is mostly "whatever is opposite of fandom writes". I hate when fandom collectively decides which one is top, which one is bottom. If fandom have variety I have my preferences but they are not strong. If I like author well enough I don't care.
Not into omegaverse. One of the reasons being softer characters always end up as omega. Nope. Not doing this.

When I first get into a pairing, I don't have any preferences, I'll happily read fic of any configuration. However, I will eventually develop very strict preferences about who's on top and who's on bottom. I have dropped longfics that I otherwise liked if they have it opposite of my preference.
It's a mix of character personalities, dynamics and what I find hot. It really depends on the pairing. I might see A as a top in A/B, but as a bottom in A/C.
Sometimes I do see the couple switching, but even then I have preference to how each configuration goes. For example, on one of my OTPs, I see top!A/bottom!B as a rough and passionate affair that's very much straight to banging. But bottom!A/top!B as very tender and 80% foreplay.

Top and bottom: yes, though not to be confused with dom and sub. That depends on characterisation. The one I like more usually tends to be the bottom, though not always. I wouldn't ever tell someone they're doing it wrong if they don't have the same preference I do though. I will say, however, that in a lot of fandoms, the people writing the dynamic opposite from what I prefer tend to write the characters otherwise majorly OOC as well. Probably a coincidence but it's kinda interesting to me.

For the vast majority of the time, not at all.
The only time I start to have a preference is when fandom basically alters a character entirely so that they would be more like a top/bottom stereotype.
When that starts happening within that fandom, then I start avoiding certain fics thanks to trust issues.
