White saviors proliferated in media to the point it became propaganda. Because let's be real here, white people aren't generally interested in saving brown people anywhere near as much as media likes to show them doing. White people barely care about each other let alone the vast swaths of people they've been actively, and sometimes enthusiastically, oppressing for hundreds of years.

White Savior stories are just white people trying to reassure themselves they've done some trickle of good among the tidal waves of genocide, slavery, and rape of entire cultures that they're historically infamous for.

The trope would go over better nowadays if white saviors' stories acknowledged the reason black and brown people need to be "saved" in most instances is because of a system white people built to serve them and their white children and their children's children in perpetuity.

Although if the secret is referring to people accusing a story about a white person rescuing a family of PoC from a burning building of being 'White Savior-y,' then yeah, they have a point. That's not part of the trope, that's just someone being heroic.

Too over-the-top. You gotta dial it back a little so people start out thinking you might be reasonable.

OP? Is that the right tag? Newish here.

I wasn't trying to be over-the-top, though? I'm literally repeating legitimate complaints people have had with the White Savior trope for a long time now. I didn't call anyone any names or use bad language. So, you tell me what I wrote that was out of line? Because your response reeks of tone policing.

Re: OP? Is that the right tag? Newish here.

Oh, honey. You can't start out saying white people don't care about anyone and are responsible for everything bad that's ever happened; you have to build up to it. Otherwise, no one falls for it. I'll probably be the only one who responds to you, now.

So much wasted potential! Kids these days. You've lost the art.

You've been in a bubble too long if you think anything I wrote is news or is in any way shocking to people who have put thought into exploring racism, which is what the White Savior trope is: racism.

And you are an asshole. I don't usually call people names lightly, even on the internet, but you are. You are an asshole.

Come back tomorrow and try again.

NAYRT but you are being an asshole. Went back and... yeah, they weren't being at all out there?

Re: OP? Is that the right tag? Newish here.

You are really, really bad at this.

Re: OP? Is that the right tag? Newish here.

So, yeah, you and your buddy earned this: You both sound white.

Ok, I've seen enough. I call troll. Stop being an asshole.

I don't think they were trolling. You may not agree with their views, but they are expressing themselves calmly and coherently while you most certainly are not. Why not respond to their actual points if you have a problem with their comment instead of this insipid counter-trolling?

Eh, someone who thinks white people are all demons and people of color are all angels is either trolling, as that's the most extreme possible white guilt-inspired social justice view, or wouldn't be able to have a genuine discussion.

Calling people troll is also a way to shut down discussion.

Yeah. Seeing this particular form of ad hominen attack is beyond frustrating.

Re: OP? Is that the right tag? Newish here.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-12 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems to me this is very naive.

Re: OP? Is that the right tag? Newish here.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-12 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really. Calling someone a troll absolutely shuts down a real discussion. It doesn't mean the other person isn't being a troll, but other times they are presenting genuine views. Even if those views seem stupid or awful.

But there's no discussion here. One person made a very cogent post, and another was being a dick about it. That's a troll.

A troll or somebody very much in denial.

I define a troll as someone who's just tossing shit out there, not because they necessarily believe something, but because it will upset somebody else. Which benefits the troll in some way (on the lowest level, amusement... on the highest level, idk, maybe someone's paying them).

One can upset others without being a troll, by denying somebody else's view because acknowledging it at all would mean getting over one's own ego. Most don't enjoy being labeled the bad guy.

AYRT

The snark points to the intent to make the original poster mad. That's a troll.

but they are expressing themselves calmly and coherently

In my head I'm drawing hearts around this phrase.

Do you deny that white people have genocided/abused other groups of people?

I don't know if OP means all white people are like this, but it actually doesn't hurt white people to acknowledge that they have been historically dicks to others. Of course, that doesn't mean other groups haven't been dicks to others, because multiple things can be true at the same time. But the problem is that instead of fixing the problem of being dicks, at least SOME white people will deny/misrepresent/cover up history so that white people don't feel bad that they might be related to some dicks. But that creates a problem where those white people unwittingly continue the deception and abusive systems, and any request to acknowledge something that runs counter to their worldview is met with denial or deflection. Because, that's not what they grew up with! How could it be true?

It's an awful feeling when people don't believe your story because it's "too much" for them.

If German kids have to learn about the Holocaust, I think other white people can handle learning that their ancestors weren't always the nicest people.

I don't really care if none of this makes sense to you, or if I've gone off a tangent or whatever. I just think that maybe you should be a better human. Others too, myself included. These topics are difficult enough to navigate without the goddamn snarkiness.
