I think on some level it's a subset of queer fans who identify with her songs, but instead of taking it as the perfectly fine self-projection onto her work that it is, they instead argue that this means she's secretly queer? Which is nonsense because an artist doesn't have to be the same as you, or have the same life for you to find meaning or identity in the music. It's kind of the point that music can reach all of us regardless of background and that's the beauty of it.

I have zero investment in Taylor Swift but not gonna lie, if it turned out she was some flavour of queer and everything we know about her is just a performative cis het show she's putting on for the sake of her career - that's a level of ruthlessness I could totally respect. Obviously it would be utterly shitty if she was made/felt pressured to be in the closet, but if it was her own decision she was at peace with because she cared more about business than (romantic) love? Heck yeah.

Maybe this is nuts, but I kind of wonder if it's because she's so gender conforming cishet that people think (and wish) that there's something more subversive going on behind the scenes. Otherwise she's a rich white girl pop star with broad appeal including to groups like fundie Christians and alt-right whackjobs and that's... not altogether comfortable for some people.
