I have an acquaintance who's acting like it's the end of the world because her child is sick. This is her ex's fault, somehow, and all good things are now spoiled, inspiring Great Lamentations on social media.

Kids get sick. Mine's got one illness or another for practically the whole school year, because children are germ factories. It's completely normal, and need not be treated like a catastrophe. In fact, treating it like a catastrophe is arguably bad for the mental health of the child.

I don't know what the point of this is. I think it's that I'm slowly realizing I don't want this person in my life, and this is yet another example of why, especially since she's blaming her ex for ruining her day when the child doesn't seem to have gotten the sickness from the ex.

SA

I forgot to mention that I really don't like the idea of taking a picture of your sick child and putting it on social media.

That poor kid. For more reason than one.

Yeah, that's a big yikes from me. Fishing for sympathy is one thing, but using photos of your kid to do it... esssh.

AYRT

I think that's what really gets me. I'm iffy about kids on social media in general. On the rare occasion I post a photo with my own child, it's from behind, because I don't want to put his face out there at an age where he's not in control of it. But even if that weren't a consideration, I wouldn't post pictures of him to get people to feel bad for me, or to pit them against someone I was angry with. He has nothing to do with that shit and shouldn't be made part of it!

That's verging on some Munchausen-by-proxy shit.

Kids get sick.

I was gonna say. My friend has a 4-year-old and he gets sick all the time because that's just the way kids are. She's got "X days since [kid] was sick" on a mini whiteboard as a joke because of it.
