I think that the foaming hatred is largely people who are trying to show what amazing hardcore fans of the original comic they are - but they're idiots because Stan Sakai is heavily involved with the TV show as well, and it's deliberately futuristic. The Usagi Yojimbo comic style wouldn't work at all. It's not meant to be the same thing!

Well, if it has Stan's blessing that helps, though I would not have minded seeing 2D animation based on his comic work.
