LOL, yeah. I love Nanny Ogg as a character, but as a mother in law she'd be a nightmare.

Yeah, she's fun to read about, but marrying into her family would suck.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-18 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This, absolutely. I mean, I'd want her on my side in any battle, or if I was coping with a difficult childbirth. But she's awful to her DILs particularly. Magrat seems to be an honorary DIL for a while, too.

I wonder when girl children make the transition from little angels to must-be-treated-like-dirt?

I'm guessing around the time they can be handed a sibling to raise.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-19 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
They don't. She treats her daughter-in-laws like that. Nothing about her treating her own daughters that way.

Thank you secretary maker!

Yeah there's that bit about now 'Nanny hadn't done a day of housework since her oldest daughter could hold a duster' and like... yikes.

I sont want to roll into discworld Fandom places with "Nanny Og was a raging misogynist, may her daughters (in law) spit on her grave" and I feel like that's how I'd come off if I brought the subject up.

Love her to death, love how female characters can have flaws and still be heroes in STP's work, and I love getting this off of my chest.

*Secret maker. Good job auto correct.

The Maker of the Secretaries shall be honored!

We have the maker of Secretaries to thank for Drumknott.

I read it as that they were a sort of secretary for making the secret for you. You know, like someone might dictate a memo to their assistant who then types it up and distributes it.

Tbh I think the witches are overrated. I'm not into "lovable bullies" as characters.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-19 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
god how did you distill all my grumpy simmering rage down so eloquently, lovable bullies is exactly it

the more witches books I read the less I can stand them

NAYRT

Hey, look at that, there are at least three of us!

I want to like the Witches books. But when two of the main characters are like that, I just can’t enjoy the stories.

I think this ultimately is why I never got into the Tiffany Aching books: I don't buy Nanny Ogg or Granny Weatherwax as the wise and helpful mentors to a young girl. I read Equal Rites, and maybe Granny could have gotten better over time, but what I saw with them and Magrat didn't fill me with confidence.
