nearing 50 here and I can say with authority that it happens to us all. it takes time to fully realize that not all relationships are for a lifetime, and in fact, the transience is what makes life rich.

I won't tell you not to mourn, or how, but ime remembering the good is better than trying to revisit what you think are good memories only to find out how bad it actually was. been there, and OOF. cherishing what you remember and what you have - chat logs, links that aren't dead, fanart saved on an old hard drive - is how we keep good in our lives. mourn what you can't regain but be glad you went through it and cherish what it did for you.

I feel that.

Left a friend group a year back, not necessarily because it wasn't "the same," but because I think I'd outgrown a couple of the people, and the ones I did want to keep in touch with weren't terribly interested in keeping in touch with me outside of the group. Just gave me a sense of not really belonging there (it felt like a rivalry between two cliques, neither of which I was a part of... and the more time went on, the more it became obvious). Still hoping to find my tribe. At least a tribe where I feel I can be my authentic self.

I'm not the best person to listen to about this but, I would try and reach out. Even for a simple, "Hello, what's up? We used to roleplay together and hang out, just wanted to see how you're doing." etc.

It sounds silly, but it's a good way to make people feel special, even if it ends up not going anywhere.

Life is short. Just reach out. Either nothing will come of it but at least you'll know you tried, OR you'll rekindle a friendship with someone you obviously clicked with really well at some point.

The new friendship didn't have to be exactly the same as your old one, because people and interests change, as you acknowledge in your secret. But having friendships with people you've known for years and years, even if you're not joined at the hip anymore, can be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.

I will also encourage you to reach out and say hi to see if anyone wants to reconnect.

I will caution, be aware that you are both at different points in your lives now. Best method is to catch up and be aware how you have changed as we as how they have changed.

It's perfectly OK if your dynamic is different now as compared to when you were younger, it can almost feel like you're getting to know each other all over again.

Because I reconnected with an old fandom friend a few years ago and it was a different breed of heartbreak to realize my friend wasn't like how I remembered them. And I was too eager to fill the trust and vulnerability in our friendship too quickly with the idea of "we've known each other for so long" forgetting that there are a number of years we hadn't talked and of course neither of us talked about that gap and what changed between us and as individuals.
Some bad exchanges happened and we stopped talking and I regret reconnecting with them.

That secret really hit hard!
I used to roleplay on a private server based on Ultima Online when I was much younger. It was strictly for roleplaying, and I had my character for years: Starting out as an adventurer who landed at the port and found her calling as a healer. In the end I ran my own hospital and had a huge house in the main city - and I was married to another player.
I talked to this guy everyday, planning out storylines and all that but when I stopped playing I lost contact. It's been more than 15 years and that secret made me wonder what he's up to and how life treated him. But I have no idea where to even start looking for him: I have no phonenumber or social media accounts of him. I don't even know his full name...oh well...

Very late, but....yeah.
Same for me, with a group of friends in RL. We just don't connect anymore, and it's hard and sad sometimes. I have the memories, and they're lovely, but...yeah.

While I love Naruto/Sasuke, I've always been partial to Kakashi/Sasuke as well tbh. Have yet to find any fic that isn't terrible though.

That fandom certainly goes way back and there were fics on mailing lists and really old websites that are now defunct. But the heyday was probably the early to mid 2000s on FFnet, and I believe the most well known writer in that fandom has deleted her fics off of that site and AO3, though.
