What do you do when you are sad?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-19 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
What is your form of comfort, or how do you like to cheer yourself up? Sometimes it's good and healthy to wallow, but for those times you don't want that how do you handle it?

Comfort tv that makes me happy. Doctor Who, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Buffy, Galavant. Something both escapist and fun.

Depends on the reason I'm sad. Generally though, I watch sketch comedy. It's short and varied enough to stop my brain from thinking of why I'm sad. I often don't laugh at all, but it keeps me on an even keel. The original Horrible Histories show got me through a really awful month a few years ago.

Can I recommend The Fast Show?

Usually YouTube. Jenny Nicholson, Good Mythical Morning, Scary Game Squad, and Monster Factory are my main choices.

It kind of depends on the day. If there are things I need to do, I'll get up and take a shower, put on nice clothes (not necessarily anything fancy, just something presentable to wear in public, not sweatpants and an old t-shirt like I'd wear around the house) and makeup, and go do whatever I need to. I'll listen to music I like while I'm driving to wherever I need to go, and usually by the time I get there I'm in a much better mood. Honestly, music alone goes a long way toward cheering me up (I read a study once that said it affects some of the chemicals in your brain similarly to certain drugs) but I usually don't think about it when I'm not in the car.

If there's nothing particular I have to do that day, I'll spend the day listening to comedy podcasts, reading, watching YouTube, playing games, and looking at random stuff online. I'll make myself something really good to eat, or maybe go out and get food if I feel like it, possibly bake something if I'm in the mood. Just a day where I can distract myself completely and not have to think about whatever I'm sad about.

Depending on situation and my feelings I can do one, some or all:
-listen to music
-watch emotional movies/TV episodes
-watch YT videos that can help my emotions, either by distraction or feeling like I got some help processing my feelings
-write my feelings out in a diary or private blog
-call/text a friend who I know can lend a sympathetic ear
-go out driving or go on a walk, sometimes I go to a store and browse around for a while
-cook or order food I enjoy

Try to do at least one small thing a day to make things around me a little better, whatever chore or fun project isn't too hard. Sometimes something really small if I'm feeling very badly like just cleaning a single table or taking out the trash, but being in the habit helps me go a little further and gives me the sense that I'm there for myself looking after myself when I'm sad and things will be OK.

Drive, preferably on quiet roads with low speed limits

Showering helps me feel physically better. Upbeat music is quick one, if I have more time I will watch a movie that is new to me.
