It is not so much even that the new fans don't know the etiquette, it is that they often get weirdly hostile if they are even informed of the etiquette and get angry about being asked to even try to fit in.

This. I've seen new fans get really bitchy about, for example, being asked to tag/put content of certain ships under a cut (in cases where the ship is like, incest or a major age gap or something that could genuinely make people uncomfortable to see on their dash) when that has always just been the understood etiquette in the fandom.

This can be really awkward in small fandoms ime, where a few new people joining and not playing by the same etiquette (such as your example of not tagging for common triggers when that was previously expected) can cause quite a ripple.
