Could be neither.

In one of my main fandoms, for instance, there's a section of toxic fans that are relegated to just Xhitter. We run them out of anywhere else they try to go. One of their signature tells is blaming everything on the production company, which is an indie startup.

We recently just had someone show up, comparing the indie production company unfavorably to an established conglomerate production company, and they were very pissed when they got pushback on that and they said that we were a completely toxic fandom to newcomers.

They, naturally, completely ignored the two posts that literally were just in front of theirs asking the usual questions a newcomer would have: "Where can I find x?" and "Am I the only one who missed this? I'm so confused, what does this mean?" neither of which had anyone being an asshole and people went out of their way to welcome them and answer their questions.

Do I think that the new person went out of their way to antagonize us? No.
Do I think that the new person should have lurked a bit and gotten to know the fandom? Absolutely.

If you don't do some reading and get the lay of the land first, you're going to step on some landmines and really, you only have yourself to blame.
