Every popular LGBTQ term in use now existed back then and most existed much further back. They weren't in as popular use then, but also..... turtles can't talk.

NAYRT Oh please don't pull "dragons aren't real so you can't criticize world building". TMNT's all thing that they are just a guys in early 00s. And they are not nerdy enough to be versed in queer theory. So this reads as OOC and too contemporary. It doesn't for you? Well, congrats, shut up

Like maybe Donny would be up to date, can't tell me that guy's not on the internet, but even then I have seen the way people talk about being queer change a LOT in the last twenty years.

nayrt

Hmm, I don't agree that all current terminology existed 20 years ago or that terms were used the same way at all. Language changes quickly as time passes. But I also think if you headcanon a character as gay they could know the popular terminology of their time (including that which is in use today) from IRL community and social spaces. So it's definitely not automatically unrealistic or only appropriate for internet-using characters either.

Hmm... Donatello might be, but it's difficult to say if 20 years ago he'd be actively seeking out queer communities, or other communities using LGBTQ terms that are widely used today. And that's assuming those communities even used those terms back then.
