I definitely have a hard time reading books these days. I use to make time every day to get at least an hour to read, but after living with my family during 2020 I had long since lost that habit and will get into reading every few weeks or even months in between.

I think the one time I had read the most was the year during college I had about 4 hours to kill between classes 3 times a week and just use to stay in the library reading.

Same here, OP. I’ve been making it a priority to at least read before bedtime instead of watching TV or being on my phone. I can’t finish a book in a day anymore, but maybe in a week or so, and it’s worked well for me . . . Except when the book is really engaging and I’m up reading it all night, which basically guarantees I’ll be an over-caffeinated zombie at work.

Same. Big same. I think it's the stress of modern adult life. When I was a kid, I could throw my whole self into whatever book I was reading, but now I have part of my mind wondering if I have enough money for my mortgage, part of my mind wondering what we're going to eat this week since groceries are getting so expensive, semi-chastising myself that I should be cleaning, I know I need to rest, but maybe watching tv would be better, or playing a video game, or reading a comic, or or or etc etc etc. I can't concentrate for very long on anything anymore.

I feel this too. Setting myself a challenge to read X books a year has helped me read more. Sometimes I'm reading novellas over longer books, but I still count that as a win.

I go through phases where I don't want to read books. I'll start them and then just not want to finish (so many times that it's clearly me and not the books). It happens more and more often as I get older, too. But I'm back in a book phase for now so that's something.

I do wish I could read like I did when I was a kid, but the problem isn't attention span or other interests, it's not being able to find a book I can just dive into and stay immersed. I have quit so many books between page 2 and chapter 3 in the past 10 years, but I've re-read my favorites so much I can't even re-read anything either, so...what do. I actually read through my college astronomy textbook recently because it was on my shelf and the only book I hadn't read. It's 25 years out of date and wildly wrong but it was an unread book.

I am ready and willing to read a lot more books than I do now, but publishers and authors gotta meet me halfway on this and publish books I actually want to read. If it is a "fresh new take" or "but the difference is..." then fuck it, no. I'm not interested in that.
