Re: Is there anything that's beyond the pale?
(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 02:44 am (UTC)(link)Re: Is there anything that's beyond the pale?
(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 03:02 am (UTC)(link)I'm personally not sure, but I've had people in the past few weeks tell me that it's possible to find cases where they are.
Re: Is there anything that's beyond the pale?
(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 03:14 am (UTC)(link)There was a news story about a decade ago about a mexican cartel forcing (attempting to force?) kidnapping victims who were siblings to have sex with each other. It would not be a stretch for one sibling to categorically refuse, and the other to do it to save both of their lives. I would be hard pressed to say the sibling complying was morally wrong in that case.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 03:47 am (UTC)(link)That's where the justification lies. Even though the one person is physically doing the act, we recognize that it is not something they would have done of their own volition. This is why being forced at gunpoint is exculpatory for several types of crimes.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Is there anything that's beyond the pale?
(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 03:25 am (UTC)(link)But how would justified genocide even work?
I literally can't think of an example where it would be justified to kill a group of people, young and old. I don't quite want to either.
Re: Is there anything that's beyond the pale?
(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 03:59 am (UTC)(link)I can't either, not against people. I won't say that it's always and forever wrong and it can never be the answer to anything, because that's the same thing as trying to prove that black swans don't exist, but if there is any kind of justification for that it must be a very, very particular set of circumstances that have yet to be met and probably won't ever be met.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)It would only be genocide if you claimed that every person who shares their race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, etc etc, also had that disease and they all needed to die. If you're targeting just a small area, like a town, or a building, regardless of the race, ethnicity etc etc of the people in there, that's a quarantine.
Re: Is there anything that's beyond the pale?
(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)A disease doesn't fall under that. No matter how much you want to twist the definition.
Re: Is there anything that's beyond the pale?
(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 05:50 am (UTC)(link)In that case, this was slightly icky phrasing if you're not even sure yourself. That's a really wild statement to make without something to back it up.
Re: Is there anything that's beyond the pale?
(Anonymous) 2023-10-27 11:30 am (UTC)(link)My intent wasn't to say that I personally believe that; it was to say that it seems to be the view of many I've come across in the recent past. All the subsequent thoughts and questions are me trying to figure out how they could have arrived at that conclusion, and despairing at the fact that they have.
