Uhh, when is rape or genocide ever justified?

I'm personally not sure, but I've had people in the past few weeks tell me that it's possible to find cases where they are.

There was a news story about a decade ago about a mexican cartel forcing (attempting to force?) kidnapping victims who were siblings to have sex with each other. It would not be a stretch for one sibling to categorically refuse, and the other to do it to save both of their lives. I would be hard pressed to say the sibling complying was morally wrong in that case.

But the one who goes along with it in that case is doing so under duress. They are, in a sense, themselves being raped, and the moral culpability lies with the individual(s) forcing them to do it.

That's where the justification lies. Even though the one person is physically doing the act, we recognize that it is not something they would have done of their own volition. This is why being forced at gunpoint is exculpatory for several types of crimes.

Yeah, I wouldn't hold up a bank, but if I had a bomb strapped to me I guess I'd have no choice.

Hmm, yeah I'll give it that.

But how would justified genocide even work?

I literally can't think of an example where it would be justified to kill a group of people, young and old. I don't quite want to either.

I can't either, not against people. I won't say that it's always and forever wrong and it can never be the answer to anything, because that's the same thing as trying to prove that black swans don't exist, but if there is any kind of justification for that it must be a very, very particular set of circumstances that have yet to be met and probably won't ever be met.

I mean, there have been cases where people were locked up/locked in big groups and left to die to keep a disease from spreading. Not saying it was the right thing to do but the people in charge certainly felt justified.

That's quarantine, not genocide. It's tragic, but letting people die to prevent the spread of disease doesn't fall under the definition of genocide. They are not being targeted for their race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, etc.

They're being targeted for the disease they may or may not carry though.

It would only be genocide if you claimed that every person who shares their race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, etc etc, also had that disease and they all needed to die. If you're targeting just a small area, like a town, or a building, regardless of the race, ethnicity etc etc of the people in there, that's a quarantine.

The literal definition of genocide specifies people targeted for their race/ethnicity/nationality/political group. Something core to a person's being or identity, in other words, things that someone might target, hate, and hurt/kill them for.

A disease doesn't fall under that. No matter how much you want to twist the definition.

Murder, torture, rape, genocide - none of these things is wrong as a matter of course. There are occasions when each one of them makes sense.

In that case, this was slightly icky phrasing if you're not even sure yourself. That's a really wild statement to make without something to back it up.

My intent wasn't to say that I personally believe that; it was to say that it seems to be the view of many I've come across in the recent past. All the subsequent thoughts and questions are me trying to figure out how they could have arrived at that conclusion, and despairing at the fact that they have.

It's not, but when it happens to Jews/Zionists/Israelis/Americans that support Israel that may or may not be Jewish, then 50% of the world thinks it's okay.

Israel did nothing beforehand that made the October 7th massacre justifiable and okay. Anyone that thinks so is nothing more than a psychopath that hates Jews and wants them dead.
