I mean... I can kinda understand situations where torture would be on the table - if someone is part if a group that intends to kill a lot of people (like in a terrorist or military atrack) and someone has to get relevant infor

+information out of them to try and prevent it.

Torture is a really unreliable way of getting accurate information out of people, though. It negatively impacts memory, and it incentives lying: people will say anything to get it to stop. You're far more likely to wrest a false confession out of a torture victim than you are to gain actual intel.

nayrt but this. In the end, you're just hurting somebody for no reason.

Oh I am aware, doesn't mean someone wouldn't be tempted to do it on the off-chance it doesn't work. Like, there was a case in my country where a police detective threatened a kidnapper with violence/torture because they were trying to find the toddler the guy kidnapped. The detective was (rightfully) charged for it but I can absolutely understand the desperation he would have felt to do everything possible to get the kid's location (the child ended up dying) so... yeah.

doesn't work = does work

You can understand someone's motives and acknowledge that their methods are wrong. I can't understand any argument trying to make those methods appear acceptable in any way.

The thing about torture is that it doesn't work.

Like, we could debate if cutting a kid's hand off to save them from scurvy was valid. I mean, scurvy is really bad actually and we have great prosthetics and they could live a long and happy life without a hand. But cutting of a kid's hand has nothing to do with scurvy so the debate is fundamentally nonsense.

Would it be okay to cut a kid’s hand off the hand went evil?

There is a minuscule chance of a kid's hand going evil of its own accord. (Actually probably zero, but just in case, we never say zero.)

But I'll humor you. In the case a hand must be cut off, it would be to preserve the life of the kid and probably those around him. Hopefully, they'd give him anesthesia if that was an option, unless there was no time, and the hand was literally and impossibly shooting out shards of glass and killing everyone around the kid (or some other harmful/life threatening scenario). Which again, would not happen.

That actually is a thing. It's called Alien Hand Syndrome. https://www.medlink.com/articles/alien-hand-syndrome

Considering that it's a neurological disorder, I doubt cutting off the hand would work, but I wouldn't doubt that it's been tried. Especially before we figured out it was neurological.
