Torture is a really unreliable way of getting accurate information out of people, though. It negatively impacts memory, and it incentives lying: people will say anything to get it to stop. You're far more likely to wrest a false confession out of a torture victim than you are to gain actual intel.

Oh I am aware, doesn't mean someone wouldn't be tempted to do it on the off-chance it doesn't work. Like, there was a case in my country where a police detective threatened a kidnapper with violence/torture because they were trying to find the toddler the guy kidnapped. The detective was (rightfully) charged for it but I can absolutely understand the desperation he would have felt to do everything possible to get the kid's location (the child ended up dying) so... yeah.

You can understand someone's motives and acknowledge that their methods are wrong. I can't understand any argument trying to make those methods appear acceptable in any way.
