In this context, hybrids are characters that are a combination of human and non-human body parts, yes?

Yes.

Thanks to the Secret Maker!

I’ve been immersed in the Rivers of London books (rereading the earlier ones as I wait for my library holds). And now animal-human hybrids are just really unnerving for me.

I’m sure I’ll get over it, but that’s my primary association right now.

Ick, yeah, that’s a world where it seems exclusively non-consensual or maybe sort of consensual for the sake of profitable sex work (at the exclusion of a more “normal” life/occupation).

Note: I’m currently reading “Broken Homes”, so I don’t know if there are more hybrid people in future books.

There are certain fandoms of mine where you can easily suspend your disbelief [I.E Trigun fandom's recent obsession with drawing Vash and Knives with the most eldritch horror-looking limbs and no one batting an eye at it]

As far as I can tell my current fandom uses hybrid to mean "furry" and I wish they'd just call them furries, because then I don't have to worry about what their parents were having sex with.

I read a “shifters” book where no one ever fucking shifts, so a “cat shifter” is functionally just a catboy. I feel your fucking pain.

NAYRT

But isn’t “shifter” usually intrinsically linked to “shape-shifter”, implying that a creature shifts from one for to the other?

I’m not involved in any of these kink (or interest?) communities, just curious about the linguistics.

I would have agreed with you, but the book keeps calling them “shifters,” and it’s never so much as hinted they can shift!

Very odd!

(Anonymous) 2023-10-28 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, when I first read your comment, I thought you meant the fans' parents not the characters'.

I guess I always assumed they were some weird lab experiment.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-28 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt as far as I can tell sometimes they are, and sometimes their parents are also the same kind of "hybrid" so it's clearly just a fantasy race/species of anthro, and sometimes there's some kind of curse/mutation or they're shifters who prefer a partial shift or it's just really dramatic elective body mods. One of them canonically got his human ears replaced by dog ears after a horrible barbershop mishap, one of them canonically was changed by a god due to hubris, but most of them there's no canon explanation and it's all fanon (As is the term "hybrid"). But when it's totally unspecified my brain always jumps to hybrid in the same way that Spock was a hybrid... which works a lot better mentally when they're an elf hybrid than when they're a sheep hybrid.

I never saw this until I got into the MHA fandom, which is has heaps of it. I also don't understand! It's fans seem to be not furries either? What is happening to the world

(Anonymous) 2023-10-28 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
this is really common in mcyt fandoms. I'm not a big fan, but I can go along with it as long as it's not too out there or too weird for the character/person

(Anonymous) 2023-10-28 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I was gonna say, it's a big thing there. I think it makes sense, given some of the player skins (avians, on the other hand, seem to be more of a "assigned bird by fandom" thing). Definitely some I like better than others, though.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-28 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I like it best when it makes sense with the player skin-- like blaze hybrid TangoTek and slime hybrid iJevin. I don't really like random animal hybrids though, especially if the animal doesn't even exist in minecraft.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-28 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, cardinal sin if it doesn't exist in the game! (minus the avians, but that's the elytra for you--no one is keen on the beetle wings)

(Anonymous) 2023-10-28 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon above who was also talking about mcyt - I'm fine with the head canons I just sometimes double-take at, like, people casually calling Zed a sheep hybrid as if his dad was a human and his mom was a sheep. That's only like, the fifth most likely way I would postulate Zed ending up with sheep traits. And when you use that same term for people who have animal traits and people who are part-human/part other intelligent race the implications get even weirder.

especially when one of the major characters canonically fucked a fish. And another one is an actual Greek god sometimes.
