Sure, if you are privileged enough that politics never really affect you then that is possible. I guess. Not everyone is lucky enough to not be affected by shitty politics, some of us have no choice but to push back and "bring politics into it" by pointing out the shitty politics and implications that do have real world effects.

Everything is politics, especially art and critical spaces.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
And escapism is a much-needed part of human existence, and maybe it's not the worst thing in the world for people to seek out peaceful spaces away from all that.

ESPECIALLY if you're directly affected by said politics in your real life.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Escapism isn't always possible, and that is where privilege comes in. And just because you are oppressed somewhat and can set that aside for an "escape" doesn't mean that other people are not struggling more and need to push back against your level of relative privilege as a means to survive.

TL;DR. Sorry you are made to think about things. Some people don't have that luxury.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
And as mentioned above, some people are forced to think about these things, and live with them, 24/7 outside of their little internet box, and maybe want five fucking minutes of peace and quiet inside it, without self-righteous white Americans preaching about it like one more fucking reblog will somehow, miraculously end it all.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
And some people are forced to live with them 24/7 and don't even have the luxury of your 5 minutes freedom because they still deal with it even when on their little internet box. See how that works? Just because you have a hard life does not mean other people do not have a worse life, and even less freedom.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, right, so we're playing the Oppression Olympics. Because one person doesn't get five minutes, another person isn't allowed to want even that much. Gotcha. Have fun with that moral high ground.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You are. I'm just making sure my internet space is a safe one by pushing back on hostile values.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool. Enjoy the privilege of being lucky enough to choose which shitty politics do and don't affect you, I guess.

The hostile values of...people with shitty lives wanting the occasional non-shitty moment?

By making that space much less safe for others. Ther are many spaces on the Internet where you can rant about your politics all you like and spew whatever you want 24/7. Go there.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
There is nothing at all productive to be gained from this kind of one-up-manship.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The people who can't afford five minutes of freedom are not in fandom. They are not consuming entertainment media. That's the kind of situation you are describing. By being in fandom at all, you are inherently taking that five-minute break to use as you see fit. So your point is moot.

Why not block and move on. I really empathize with what you're saying but I feel it's unproductive to seek out debates or to spend time in toxic fandoms where people are bigoted or ignorant. I would rather focus on offline activism and keep online fun. Sometimes that means a lonelier fandom experience, since I share it only with closer fandom friends, and sometimes it means leaving a fandom, but it's better for me than wasting my time on being upset while trying to enjoy my hobbies.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You want freedom from it, build a world which people do not need freedom from. Then you can rest.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, because some rando on the internet really has the power to do that. Again, sometimes escapism is the ONLY THING people have to hope for. Shitting all over small, poor, broken people who are desperately trying to hold their own lives together isn't the great big anti-war 'gotcha' you seem to think it is.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Why aren't you out there doing that right now, anon?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they're a keyboard warior slacktivist who talks big but is privileged enough to not worry about their life, otherwise they wouldn't have time to waste in a fandom community holier-than-thou-bitching at people.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
you obviously know them in real life and know them so well

Yup. I know the type well, and they're wankers who ruin every community they infest.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-04 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
So you really think it's absolutely necessary to dump your shitty political takes all over a fandom tag where it doesn't belong?
And no, fandom is not activism. Never has been, never will be.

+1000000

You want to take real, meaningful action? Get off the Internet. If you're still here, acting like demanding action from your 30 followers makes any kind of difference except to make you feel good about yourself, you've got nothing to say that's worth hearing.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-05 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
So get off your lazy butt and go be an activist in the real world. That's the way to change things, not yelling at strangers online.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-05 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom is not activism. Stop being such an obnoxious ass.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-05 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
My politics maybe be wholly or partially with the author or partially or wholly against them and if I'm reading fanfic or looking or fanart I don't want or need a lecture on How This Person Is Bad and how Voting This Way Or You're A Nazi getting in the way of that. I have other places to read about politics and any yelling from an author about "my body my choice" isn't going to make me antiabortion nor pro forced vax.
