For once, I don't think this is a problem specifically aimed at female artists, so much as artists who favour pop as a genre. Male artists, even those with real musical experience and education, get lumped into the 'talentless pretty boy pop icon' category just as surely as the so-called 'air-headed pop princesses'.

Yep, this. OP might not realize there's a long history of pop stars who don't necessarily write their own music or play instruments. There's a lot of industry-driven pop star creation and marketing, and it's not unusual that people might assume a popular star might be part of that.

My mind immediately went to David Cassidy! He wanted to be taken seriously as a musician, but it was an uphill battle due to 'The Partridge Family' and his heartthrob image.

What you say is true. But at the same time, you can't really divorce that perception of pop from gender, either. One of the reasons why people are so dismissive of pop is because its listening base and audience is so female-oriented.
