Having the right identity might not make someone a good person to you, but there are plenty of people for whom it does.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-10 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
What's your point?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-10 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure the point is "most people are aware that your identity does not a saint make except some people are convinced their precious pet minority can do no wrong ever".

(Anonymous) 2023-11-10 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
…isn’t that kinda the point of the secret, though? He’s giving them a pass because of their identity.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-10 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
And those people are wrong.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-11 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
If the person is fictional, yes, often. Real people not so much, at least not in this case. I don't know about every identity group, but I don't know anyone in my parts of the NB or wider LGBTQ community who doesn't think Ezra Miller is a horrible person.

I may not know anyone who thinks Ezra Miller is fantastic, but I know far too many people who made excuses for the supposedly genderqueer guy in Virginia that raped two of his classmates. People who had before said, "consent can be withdrawn at any time" and had shared the, "sex is like tea" meme were suddenly spouting, "she had sex with him before, so was it really rape this time?" They were overjoyed when Merrick Garland was sent to investigate her father for terrorism (he lost his shit at a school board meeting, because they were trying to cover up what had happened).

There's a case out at Berkeley right now. Latina professor (who in all likelihood is mentally ill, and needs help) stalked a colleague, and was suspended for it. The students are going on a hunger strike because they believe she's been wrongly suspended. Not because they think she didn't do the stalking, no; but because, since she's Latina, they think it's understandable for her to stalk people.

In the case of the Latina professor, it sounds like you're missing a lot of nuance. Was she suspended because she was a stalker, or because she was a Latina stalker? Would a white stalker have been suspended? Have white people stalked people at Berkeley before and gotten less harsh of a punishment? In many cases, a minority's crimes being punished are just an excuse to punish a minority and it's clear because privileged groups go unpunished for the same crimes.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-11 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
No, none of that applies in this case, and the students' position is not that a white stalker would have gone unpunished, but that because she is Latina, it is understandable that she'd stalk someone.

Should people who are minorities be allowed to commit crimes in order to redress prior wrongs?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-11 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
But... then the argument there should be that the white colleagues should be punished as well and not that she should get off wtf?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-11 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're right. Maybe people thought that Ezra is being picked on because he's NB, but no, he's just a creep.

Where's Armie Hammer these days? Exactly!

(Anonymous) 2023-11-11 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Scott doesn't give Miller a "pass" but before learning the details assumed it was overblown. I think that's worth interrogating! It's interesting! Dig down!

(Anonymous) 2023-11-11 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Right, they are not being picked on because they're NB, it's because they are a creep.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-11 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The fun thing about Armie Hammer is that all that stuff appears to have been made up.

THANK YOU SECRET MAKER!

(Anonymous) 2023-11-11 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
And to be clear NerdSync isn't giving Ezra a pass! But I think it would be interesting to dig into why he first assumed it was bigotry. Think about that In-Tribe/Out-Tribe stuff!

Another thing I've thought of in the while since I prompted this secret is how everyone tries to either/or the the situation with the young NB Native American activist. If the kiddo is telling the truth that their parents are transphobic (often with an analysis of the parents' court documents) then Ezra is in the right! If the parents are just doing their best than Ezra's a creep! My siblings in Hermes! Folks in rough situations are even more vulnerable to further abuse because they don't have a strong safety net. Maybe the parents are great but use imperfect terminology, maybe they're AWFUL, none of that makes Miller's behavior ok. It's just kind of a nonsense point.

It's like we(/the couple of people I've seen analyze the situation) REALLY want to figure out who is the White hat and who is the Black Hat so we can support/condemn appropriately. But real life is messy and one thing doesn't override another.

As a counter example: the woman with the children who claims her husband is abusive and THAT'S why she took her kids and moved across the globe to Miller's compound that is full of drugs and guns. I have no reason to doubt her claims about her husband, but it's still super fucked up to have kids in that situation. Miller has TONS of cash they could have paid for a hotel room for the lady there is no excuse for this bullshit, assuming they really wanted to help and not just kidnap some children. Also, weirdly, I haven't seen anyone dig into the abusive allegations against this husband. I wonder if it's because I've been the most interested in LGBT+ opinions and they haven't been as interested in this one issue.
