Secret Santa or other types of gift exchanges?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-10 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you participate in any? How do they work out for you? I've always liked the idea, but I usually end up disappointed unless it's between friends/family and people I know will actually make an effort. If it's strangers, then it's a roll of the dice and I frequently get the person who either ghosts or decides to empty their junk drawer into a box and mail it to me.

I once got a small care package from a person who included a random chick-lit novel (when I specifically said on my profile that I don't enjoy this genre) that she claimed not to know was chick-lit. Lady, the book cover is pink, and it was about shopping and vampires or something. She also sent me random cheap pieces of stationery (not whole sets, I'm talking 1-2 sheets of notepaper + 1 envelope) that REEKED of smoke, then claimed not to realize that it would smell like smoke even though oh yeah, she does smoke but she quit a whole month ago and had no idea that things sitting in her house would stink like an ashtray.

I gave up after that.

Currently doing an internet exchange one. Almost didn't do it this year because of a complete lack of acknowledgment from the recipient last year. But I figure I shouldn't let that stop me from participating. But I tend to keep it digital (fic, for example). Not sure I'd have the nerve to do exchanges where you physically send packages to others. Unless, as you said, it's with people I know.

I participate in the ones at work. I usually get really thoughtful gifts (there are fourteen of us in total, so we all know each other fairly well), but one year I got a book that wasn’t on my wishlist and a used giftcard to Barnes & Noble. I felt a little funny about that.

I don't want to be ungrateful, but getting me books that aren't on my wishlist is a pet peeve of mine. I've got a fairly extensive library already, so I try not to collect books that I won't reread or enjoy again and reading random books...well, that's what the library is for! But sometimes when people know you're a reader, they just grab random books like anything will be good enough. I once had a well meaning relative give me a hardback thriller (forget the author, but a fairly well known one) that I'm pretty sure she snagged off the Barnes and Nobles bargain section. I thanked her politely and said I looked forward to reading it, but honestly, I would've preferred just getting the $3 or however much it cost.

We do secret Santa for Christmas with my family and it always feels like a pain. I do appreciate the rules: under $25, regifted, homemade, or consumable.

But it still feels like an annual exercise in shuffling tchotchkes from one household to the other. Or making cookies that will be eaten and quickly forgotten.

(I tend to go for the latter option.)

Those are sensible rules, IMO, though I'd say "regifted from somewhere else BESIDES previous gift exchanges". I like receiving edible presents, too. It saves me from gathering too much clutter and I just like food in general.

I used to participate in reddit Secret Santa. But reddit killed it. :(

I like organizing things and seeing people enjoy events but I hate Secret Santas. I've never gotten a good present in Secret Santa exchanges except when it was with a small group of friends. My workplace wants to do a Secret Santa this year but I don't want to participate in it. Maybe the excuse of being the organizer will give me an out in not joining, only organize it.

I've never gotten good presents with a secret santa, not even in my family.

I like doing the one through Reddit. I enjoy the idea of giving gifts across great distances to complete strangers.

I never sign up for Secret Santa at work. I don't want more of my favorite candy/soda/whatever and I freak out about how much I should spend for a coworker. But also I just want to get in, work, and get out. I don't like social expectations at work.

White Elephant parties with my friends are super easy because I just give out handcrafted stuff. ENJOY SUCKERS! I'd of given you this for NOTHING! I just like making stuff!

I do three every year, all hosted on Elfster. One is for my cat (I’m in a small cat group on Facebook that was started by my high school friends and basically the group is just people they’ve become friends with since then). The cat one is awesome because it’s fun to come up with the gifts we send and it’s amazing to see how far $10 can stretch because usually you can’t get even one thing for that amount.
I also do one with my Lego club so that’s always amazing. We have strict rules about how much of the value can be non Lego stuff so it’s always worth participating.
And I do one with my sewing group but it isn’t limited to sewing supplies.
Mine are always fun because we set up wish lists and in two of them (the Lego club and sewing group) we also do a questionnaire to give any idea of other interests. We can also set boundaries. For instance, I cannot accept any packages with food in them (except the cat one but she can only have fish or chicken items sent. If they send anything else, it could kill me when I open the box because my allergy isn’t limited to consumption; I’m fume reactive). All of the exchanges have designated admins who we send pictures to for approval before sending the packages. If someone sends without approval, they’re banned. If someone swaps stuff out after admin inspection or basically rips someone off, they’re banned. In the Lego club, it also means the admins chip in and send a replacement box and then we put the con artist on blast (it’s super common in Lego circles around the world to name and shame anyone in the Lego world who takes advantage).

Holiday_wishes is starting next week here on Dreamwidth. It's not a secret santa exchange, you just wish for stuff and fulfill wishes as much as you want, no promises.

I've had very mixed luck with those. Sometimes I didn't get anything, one year I got a bunch of stuff that was monogrammed with the wrong initial, sometimes I got very nice presents. I always try to give nice stuff for that, even if I accidentally got the name of somebody I wasn't that keen on.
