What are you reading?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-10 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Just started the Britney Spears biography.

Is it worth reading? I tried reading Spare for the gossip, but I got bored and couldn't get through it.

Two things: Doctor Who: Myths and Legends and the Buffy Encyclopedia.

Do you recommend her biography? Because holy cow she's lived a life!

I'm reading Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America by Beth Macy. It's all about the opioid epidemic from the early aughts to the late 2010's. It's informative and emotional and neat. The shit she's talking about is horrific (I keep meaning to get some Narcan for my first aid kit...) and I appreciate how the author talks about things from all kinds of perspectives. From the doctors to the sales reps to the patients to addicts to the families of addicts to recovery health care workers to drug dealers to lawyers suing Purdue to the cops to the feds to economists. And I'm not even done yet.

I know everyone has stories and feelings about this issue but it's very dear to me because my beloved has a chronic pain issue. He easily could have been prescribed one of these drugs as it cropped up in the early 2010's. Luckily we live in a state where CBD was legal. Eventually. We've taken quite a financial hit because he couldn't pass a drug test for certain jobs but I look at the 56% addiction rate for treating chronic pain with these drugs and I thank my lucky stars.

Once I'm done I think there's a follow up book by the same author. So that's neat!

I’m reading some random indie sword and sorcery book, the first in a series. It’s…ok. I forget the name and the author so that right there tells you I wouldn’t bother recommending it to anyone. The author is a big fan of college entrance exam vocabulary lists and uses a lot of words from them. Unfortunately, they don’t know what those words mean. That’s made me laugh a few times but overall the book is interesting enough to keep reading. I doubt I’ll read past the first book, though.

Re-re-re-reading Boyfriend Material, by Alexis Hall. It's the first book by him I read, and I imprinted pretty hard.

Weekend Plans!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2023-11-10 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What is everyone doing?

I am visiting my sister and BIL. They want to have a horror movie marathon. Other than that, not sure what we will do.

Chores/errands and food shopping. Gotta go out of town for something I'm not terribly excited about but I feel a little better about it than I did last week. Hope to also make progress on my Secret Santa.

That sounds like so much fun! What movies do you plan to watch?

I’m just chilling at home and enjoying the cooler weather. I have more leaves to mow up and a few little projects around the house (tomorrow is the day I’ll finally dig out a second pair of pliers so I can attach the new chain to powder room toilet!). I love a weekend like this, just quietly getting stuff done and relaxing with my dogs without any external pressures.

My husband has tomorrow off (he normally works Saturdays) which is a nice little respite in the special hell for postal workers that is the holiday season.

Whether we'll actually do anything or just rest and recuperate is another matter.

Secrets you don't want to make...

(Anonymous) 2023-11-10 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and while I'm definitely not the world's greatest expert at secret design, I'll try my best.

Just to clarify - it's my intention to make all the secrets left in this thread, so even if they're not marked claimed, they will be made. I'll monitor this thread until tomorrow's secret post goes up, so feel free to leave your comments until then!

Yours truly,

a secret maker

P.S. Please don't worry if you've submitted a secret and it hasn't been posted yet. I usually post these threads before running out of the previous batch of secrets to get a head start on the next batch.

Getting tired of "X celeb for President!" comments from the general stupid internet. Maybe some are just joking, and maybe once in a blue moon we strike gold. But FFS, if you're serious, stop acting like one celebrity's comment that just happens to align with your views suddenly qualifies them to run an entire country. Be more discerning than that.

Besides, even if they are politically inclined or some kind of activist, sometimes their power is better used outside of office.

I have been annoyed at Archon quests before but for the current one I just wish I could skip it entirely. I'm just so completely uninterested in everything about Furina and the less I have to see of her the better.
Her character is just so grating (and basically Fischl 2.0 whom I also hate) and the fact that she probably will get this tragic so sobstory the game wants me to pretend to care about doesn't make it any better. Nor does the fact that absolutely everyone I follow for GI content can't stop gushing about her.

I was really disappointed to find out that Our Flag Means Death is a comedy. The title made me think it was dark and dramatic. :-(

Recently watched Leverage, overall it's a really fun show, would recommend. However, before starting it, I knew the ot3 was an extremely popular ship, and one of the writers tweeted that it was canon. I wasn't even expecting that to actually be true but I assumed it meant there would at least be enough subtext to be noticeable to someone who isn't actively looking for it. I was disappointed and I don't wanna be that guy who calls queerbaiting because their ship didn't happen but like. I watched this in part because someone working on the show lied about there being a queer relationship so I think I'm justified.
(I still ship it but like. Fellow poly shippers, we deserve better. Go watch Sense8.)

Secret Santa or other types of gift exchanges?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-10 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you participate in any? How do they work out for you? I've always liked the idea, but I usually end up disappointed unless it's between friends/family and people I know will actually make an effort. If it's strangers, then it's a roll of the dice and I frequently get the person who either ghosts or decides to empty their junk drawer into a box and mail it to me.

I once got a small care package from a person who included a random chick-lit novel (when I specifically said on my profile that I don't enjoy this genre) that she claimed not to know was chick-lit. Lady, the book cover is pink, and it was about shopping and vampires or something. She also sent me random cheap pieces of stationery (not whole sets, I'm talking 1-2 sheets of notepaper + 1 envelope) that REEKED of smoke, then claimed not to realize that it would smell like smoke even though oh yeah, she does smoke but she quit a whole month ago and had no idea that things sitting in her house would stink like an ashtray.

I gave up after that.

Book Ban Research

(Anonymous) 2023-11-11 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
After reading a post by The Meme Policeman earlier this week, I started thinking about book ban reporting. Thing is, with maybe a couple exceptions, I only know of book bans/threatened bans that have involved municipal libraries or other non-school entities. Is this a case of the media muddying the waters (as implied by The Meme Policeman)? Or are there more than two school districts that have attempted in some capacity to ban books?

If you have links to reporting about book bans specifically within school districts, feel free to drop them here! I really appreciate any assistance you can offer.
