It's getting depressing with fandom and social media hopping to different platforms. I enjoyed Twitter, bluesky requires an invite code, and while Tumblr can help to a certain extent, it doesn't have the same flow in information and new fics that post. And yes Tumblr may/will end up crashing soon anyways. The biggest thing I miss is just reading what a person has posted what is going in their life. Something simple like 'look at this awesome plant!' or whatever.

But my secret is that I'm a lurker, I don't post and that can honestly come across as creepy. Second secret, I fear that while I may yearn and miss for the days of LJ in the '00's, am I looking at it through rose colored glasses? Is social media just as ephemeral as it really is?

I say this while posting in FandomSecrets that has been going on for how many years now...

Oh, there were definitely good and bad parts with LJ. You weren't free from trolls or antagonistic folk, drama and all. It's just that maybe you did feel a little more connected with fandom friends, as opposed to whatever connection exists in fandom now.

"I miss LJ" is usually from people in huge fandoms who were in popular circles.

NAYRT

I don't know if that's true. I've always been a huge lurker and I miss LJ tremendously.
There were a lot of fandom content to consume: meta, master posts, fanfic recs, kink memes and all the community around edits and whatnot. You could also post anon in some role-playing places and it was awesome.
I had a pretty good time and I was never ever in a huge fandom or in popular circles.

The only thing I really don't miss are the closed communities. They almost always rejected me because I had no real presence on LJ. SIGH.
Doujinshi, fanfictions, subbed and pirated episodes are way more available now. Thank god.

It depends. I'll admit the GOT fandom had some nice comms at LJ. But I also miss the small-to-medium fandoms and wouldn't say the comms there were super popular.

That was not my experience at all. I was a no name fan, but still managed to make some friends and feel connected in my fandoms even if they were tiny. LJ was also great for finding your own niche, where you could hang out and ignore the drama in the wider fandom circles. It was also a lot harder for the drama-llamas and clout-chasers to make things go viral, and the drama was a lot more contained unless it was really egregious.
