You're 100% right, but kid!me would have been so frustrated by not being able to take off molded on clothes! ("My girl can't go save her sister from the evil kidnapper (who was ALWAYS named Sandy after the boy from Flipper?????), who wants to blackmail her for her farm, on horseback in THAT outfit!")

I think both options have their value for different kids. I used to be uninterested in the changing fashion aspect of dolls when I was very young and liked taking my dolls on outdoor trips with me, so I had some favorites with molded clothes. As an adult I'm the opposite, I love doll fashion, and so do many kids. So I don't see either type as a bad toy, just with different purposes.
