The worst fandom to be in when irl political events are happen was early 2010s the main Livejournal Hetalia fandom.

To put it lightly, People wrote very inappropriate fanfics about personified country's responses to events and someone made a fucking 8tracks playlist for the war in Iran.

Holy fuck, yes.
I'm so glad I never got into that fandom even if I was at the right time to be sucked it (everyone I knew in fandom was into it. But I was really into Russian Revolution history and WWII literature at the time and got pretty irked even by the manga's premise).
My mindset is and will be YKINMKATOK, but what I saw in certain kink meme prompts was just evil. ...or stupid. Mostly stupid, but the result was a vile pile of garbage nontheless.
Fuck that fandom.

Tbh you made the right call, although the majority of the series doesn't take place in ww2 - rather throughout various periods of time, it just started with ww2 and as far as I'm aware they're mostly set in the present day now.
Of course a lot of it has aged badly and I feel the absolute worst part was coming from certain sections of the fandom itself.

I didn't even care about the historical stuff at the time - I was mostly in it for the human AUs where everyone was internationally gay in a modern setting (Ngl livejournal was perfect for specific ships and spent the majority in the France x UK comm as well as Hetalia wank, which were the highlights of my time in that fandom lol)

(Same anon) Oh shit I accidentally missed the last part of your comment. God I had clean forgot about the kink memes. I use to think I had read every kind of kinky fic when I had discovered adultffnet at the age of 12 via yugioh fanfics - and then I saw what people came up with in the Hetalia fandom.
Likewise YKINMKATOK, but it got insane in the kink memes and AO3. At least the fics on LJ in the comms I followed were a lot tamer (OK I was also into the bdsm smut, but THAT was vanilla compared to a lot of the other fanworks).
