Kinda. They get deterred specifically because they suspect a message fic lurks behind the cover, and their aversion to message plots in general is clearly greater than their desire to risk it and read it

This doesn't say how they react if they run across peripheral racism in other non-message plot, adventure-focused stories though, so it seems exaggerated to suggest they only want "books for babies" as though only childrens media or message plots exist
