Games thread!

I still have to look it up everytime I type it out, every goddamn time.

I'm inclined to agree with you. The show is now about the showrunners being clever, and sadly, they aren't all that clever. Give me wobbly scenery and good acting, every time!

Aww, I’m sorry, OP. That stinks. Both Moffat and Chibnall (and RTD too, honestly) made story choices that I didn’t care for, but I kinda just ignore them. Watching all the Classic Who episodes that haven’t been lost made it a little easier to ignore all the stupid stuff I didn’t like because the show’s always had stupid stuff going on.

Honestly, I've never seen what the problem was. It's clever, a bit silly and light-hearted.

Yeah, that's one of those opinions you can't really say without it sounding bad, but I kind of agree especially about the sci-fi part. Its relentlessly depressing to see the exact same issues (racism, homophobia, misogyny etc) that are so prevalent IRL to be mirrored exactly in books that are supposed to be set in the distant future.

I’ve never wondered about this, but now I’m thinking about it and I don’t think I’ve seen anything equivalent to Snapewives in the fandoms I’m in.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-12 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s valid.

I feel you, I'm the same way about Native Americans. I'm a whitey who grew up in Oklahoma. As a child I went to Cherokee language classes taught by the then-Chief's wife. I see a book or movie with someone in full native headdress and I just can't. It sucks.

Oof, I can see why this is a secret, but I kinda get it. I don’t have that reaction to books featuring Black characters or other POC, but I do get mildly annoyed when an important social issue is shoehorned in. That actually happens with books that aren’t about POC too and I never quite get it. It’s like the author had to get on a soapbox to talk about LGBTQ+ rights while the characters are fighting vampires or something.

But there’s a difference between that and the book bringing up racism because it informs the character’s experiences and world view and all that jazz.

At the same time, as a POC myself, sometimes I just want to read a fluffy romcom where the girl’s biggest problem is choosing between two hot guys and not racist cops or immigration issues.

Out of curiosity: you say "POC" but only mention "black person" when referring to covers. Which did you mean? Or do you only have this reaction to black characters?

So like... Do you instantly stop reading any book with any conflict remotely connected to real world issues? For instance a female character experiencing sexism or a protagonist having an emotionally abusive parent in their past, or a story about a fictional war with realistic depictions of PTSD? I get not wanting to read a sad story or story focused on very heavy real-world issues when you are wanting a fantasy adventure, but your phrasing makes me wonder if you literally only want to read books for babies where nothing bad happens to anybody... Unless other kinds of oppression and tragedy are fine, just not racism?
