Sci-fi and Fantasy book recs

Kind of inspired by 8, but feel free to include whatever. Bonus points if its a stand-alone book.

I really enjoyed Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson. It's a slowly paced book with a very heavy focus on mundane details of world building (extremely my shit), so it won't be everyone's thing. I would recommend it to fans of "dry" scifi and setting-focused stories.

The Dreaming Sex: Early Tales of Scientific Imagination by Women has a cheesy title but is a great collection of early speculative short stories. Some of the stories have become favorites of mine after reading them here for the first time.

I only read sci-fi or fantasy when combines with horror.

So all of T. Kingfisher's stuff is horror fantasy (at least what I've read).

Salvation Day by Kali Wallace is a good sci-fi horror novel.

Slewfoot A Tale of Bewitchery by Brom was a great witchy horror book I read for October.

I mentioned Earthsea above (which is a series) but you know what, The Left Hand of Darkness. Technically it is part of the Hainish Cycle but can be read as a standalone, it sums up the universe well enough that you don't need to go and read the others to know where you are.

(honestly of all the Ursula K. LeGuin I've read, The Lathe of Heaven is the only one where race/racism is ever a plot point, and that one is set in... mostly the real world, or at least Portland, OR. But her sci-fi and fantasy worlds are populated with Black and brown protagonists)

This is older fantasy, but I enjoyed Phyllis Eisenstein's Sorcerer's Son and The Crystal Palace that involves different (and neat) types of sorcery - a lady who works with plants and fibers (because she's a weaver), sorcerers who work with metal and various types of demons, etc.

My favourite Sci-Fi series is the Warchild series by Karin Lowachee. Three books so far with a fourth in the making after a longer while but they're all different character's stories and can more or less be read on their own I think.

How has your weekend been?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-12 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been getting started on christmas shopping and my ancient tablet is starting to look like its about to die judging from the battery starting to drain a little quicker - so I might look at second hand ones or start thinking about getting a laptop again.

Pretty decent. Slept a lot. I'm currently on muscle relaxers for a back injury, and they are making me extra sleepy.

I also started Christmas shopping and also getting prepared for decorating. Our family grew this year so I needed to order new stocking holders, and I need to make another stocking, too.
I tried a new recipe today that was pretty overwhelming for me and it turned out awesome so I’m starting the week happy.

It was pretty relaxing. We watched Five Night's At Freddies (not bad but not scary), Day of the Dead, and Friday the 13th. I drove home today.

I got quite a bit of shopping done yesterday, mostly stocking stuffers for my husband. I also got my shredder fixed and have been working on a written recap of the cruise I took in April.

Beards

(Anonymous) 2023-11-12 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It sucks to be a millenial woman attracted to men who doesn't like beards.

Re: Beards

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I also dislike beards.

Not to be too explicit, but I find it too scratchy on my thighs, and I want my bois to have their faces down there often. It's also like kissing a Yeti.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
As a millennial man attempting a beard*... I honestly could NOT tell you why they have such a stranglehold on our generation's straight men, who presumably were not motivated by seeing a hot guy with a beard and having a 'do I want to be with him or do I want to be him' moment. I guess it's a gender euphoria thing for a lot of guys, even if a lot of cis men won't necessarily think of it in those terms.

*Potentially TERRIBLE hubris on my part, I had dreams of being a hunky, cuddly bear, right now I'm giving 'Shaggy from Scooby Doo hits his thirties and gets an adult metabolism'.

Bi millennial guy here, I feel just the opposite. A beard does so much to increase my attraction to most men.

As a millennial woman, I want to look at men with beards, but I absolutely do not want to kiss a man with a beard.

I'm kind of in the same boat, even though I have encountered some men who in my opinion would look really strange without beards. For some reason, I find the five o'clock shadow to be my happy place in this regard.

I don't get the big deal. Beard or no beard. Just wash yourself, I don't care.

That always seems to me like not being attracted to a woman who hasn't gotten a Brazilian.

depends on the guy. Some guys look fucking great with beards and some guys don't.

Re: Beards

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Beards are very dependent on the individual for me. Some faces they work (for me) on and some just no no no.

Re: Beards

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
this so much. I figure that men over 30 start to lose the hair on their head, so they focus on the beard (if they can grow such a thing)

Looking for anime recs

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Are there any anime with canon LGBT characters/pairings that isn't an LGBT show? Like...it isn't a romance anime. Just an anime that happens to have LGBT characters.

Height

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know how tall I thought Rob Thomas (the musician, not the producer) was, but it wasn't 5'8". I just watched an Aviation Gin ad (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dsWl2DuUNo) and he was next to Ryan Reynolds. The height difference was startling to me.
