That seems like such a knee jerk reaction. Like, do books with POC/black characters (especially if they're contemporary) often have real world issues in them? Yes. But to not give something a chance on the basis that it MIGHT?

Like, the first book with a black character on the cover that I've read recently that I can think of is 'Cinderella is Dead' and I don't recall a single thing about racism in that book (though yes it wasn't contemporary).

I get that sometimes you don't want to deal with real world issues in your escapism, fully get that (it's one of the reasons why I hate that a lot of LGBT stories centering around the negative aspects that occur when you're part of that group rather than stories where the characters just happen to be LGBT, but I feel like you're missing out on a lot of really good books and that makes me sad.

I'm sure there's a way to vet what's in a story before you read it? There's so many things like 'does the dog die' that it would surprise me if there wasn't something similar for hot button issues.
