Moffat made the companions magical girls and guys with timey wimey backstories instead of normal people like Rose, Martha, Mickey, and Donna.

Except Rose, Martha, and Donna all saved the world as much as any of Moffat's companions. The only one who was magic was Clara. All the others were on the same level as RTD's companions.

Did you see any of Amy Pond’s episodes? Ever heard of Rory? Or their baby?

Did you watch the "Bad Wolf" arc? The final episodes of series 3? Donna's ending? RTD started the trend of making companions super important to the universe. Moffat only continued what RTD did.

So, a few thing:
All of those characters were created by Moffat and mostly written by him.
Being important to the universe and being magic aren’t the same. River was magic and it made her parents magic. It’s why the Doctor met Amy in the first place when she was a small child.

And Clara was only "magic" retroactively, from the one moment, like Rose. We just met her out of order, like seeing Bad Wolf everywhere.
