i mean...this is what reviews are for. like this is an easily solvable problem, so if you're not doing the easily solvable solution, but I'm going to assume it's deeper than your dislike of after school special books, which i agree are annoying as hell.

Not OP, but good luck finding decent book reviews of genre fiction. On the professional end, you're lucky if you get anything beyond a sentence or two of fluffing from another author. And reader reviews are either going to be fangirl squeeing or 1 star reviews complaining about politics and/or shipping.

Oh, this. I was trying to find some decent reviews for a book I was interested in checking out recently and finally just gave up because I couldn't find anything that had any actual substance to it in terms of discussing what the book was actually about.

i can read a couple reviews on goodreads from each star and usually figure out if it's up my alley. maybe my meter is a little more fine-tuned.
