Sadly, this isn't a new thing. So many actors of the past also tried singing careers that didn't give them the same success. Oh sure, some had good voices, but others... I'm not sure what their managers were thinking.

I know it's not exactly the same, but I also feel this way about most Hollywood actors who think their talent automatically translates into VA. Sometimes it works depending on character, other times it just seems like the actor is wearing a cartoony costume.

Ahh flashing back to the 80s and Bruce Willis.

I hope you're not including Hugh here, he's actually very musically talented and I'm not just saying that because I have a giant crush on him, there have been lots of other actors I had big crushes on whose music I wasn't impressed with.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-14 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
He started in musical theatre, though!

(Anonymous) 2023-11-14 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Hugh Laurie can actually play the piano very well, though, right? All the songs he played in Jeeves and Wooster still make me smile.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-14 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Which Hugh? Laurie? Jackman?

Have been to a Hugh gig. He knows his strengths and surrounds himself with a band to make up for his weaker areas. He has fun. 10/10 would go again.

... okay I'm genuinely failing to see how that painting is somehow any worse than 95% of what people try to pass off as "art" these days?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-14 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there's money laundering 'art' which could be whatever, and then there's art.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-14 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm totally fine with celebrities indulging in other work, I just draw the line at the inflated monetary or artistic value assigned to subpar offerings. If it's good, awesome! Multi-talented folk exist. Unfortunately, there is a lot of coasting on name alone. It already sucks when a lot of those circles already cater to folks who are wealthy and can get in easy.

Also I'm still real mad and salty about the dollar value on Ringo Starr MS Paint art.

Hmm.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-14 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
If that's an example of Mortensen's art, I kind of like it.

As to movie celebrities picking up musical jobs:
I don't really know what to think of Jared Leto anymore, but I always thought he had some musical talent.

I don't really care if Keanu Reeves has any musical talent (I don't I've ever heard anything by Dogstar). As long as he's happy playing bass, I support that.

Jack Black should do whatever the heck he wants with music.

Zooey Deschanel's She & Him is a little quirky, but fine.

Steve Martin is pretty good on a banjo.

Billy Boyd has a lovely singing voice.

I think Shane West is a decent singer.

Though jazz is not a genre I get into at all, Hugh Laurie seems to be talented at it and really enjoy his music.

Actors I didn't know were singers or in bands before today: Dennis Quaid, Kevin Costner, John Corbett, Tim Robbins, Michael Pitt, Jason Schwartzman, Jeff Bridges, Michael Cera, Adam Brody, Ryan Gosling

Steve Martin is more than "pretty good" at the banjo. He's one of the best players there is. We're talking Earl Scruggs level of proficiency.

Weirdly enough, I knew Jared Leto as a musician long before I was aware he was originally an actor. And sure, it's definitely a matter of taste and all but I genuinely liked quite a few Thirty Seconds to Mars songs.

When they're having fun doing things that they enjoy, I just think: good for them. I'm only annoyed by the ones that take it and themselves really seriously *koff*Russell Crowe*koff*.

I might have agreed with you when I was younger, but now that I'm middle-aged... I want to give people the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes people do art for art's sake. These celebrities are allowed to do that, too. I'd like to think positively rather than get on their cases for not being as proficient in an art form as the one that made them famous.

Shaquille O'Neal should never have branched out beyond basketball.

I've also heard ominous things about an old album called Golden Throats. Who knew Muhammad Ali could sing?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-14 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Viggo has always been artsy as well as an actor. Acting isn't even his favorite of the things he does. Can't say anything about the others but if they're enjoying themselves, good on them!

(Anonymous) 2023-11-14 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Dunno, good for them. If people want to try different creative things, it s cool. Maybe I am not going to like it, but people should be free to try making things they want. And celebrities are a rare example of people who have enough money to afford it.

There are also some who actually are just as good and possibly better at their additional chosen professions - I personally think that for example David Bowie was a better actor than singer (in serious roles at least).

I think anyone (even celebrities) should be allowed to enjoy their hobbies.

Does it annoy me that some celebs get attention and/or praise for being mediocre/bad at their hobby/"second talent"? Yes.

But if Jeremy Renner wants to share his solo music to the world, I hope he enjoys creating the art even if it doesn't interest me.

I don't think a talented person needs to be great at everything they do. I don't think they need to be praised for all their creative interests either.

Oh, wow, Secret Maker is so dedicated and talented. Ty for taking the time to include all these pictures.

The real question is how the OP feels about those who are professional creative doing (paid) work in STEM.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-16 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised no one's brought up the flip side: when singers try to act.

Most of them try their hand once, get burned, and stick to singing like Britney Spears or Mariah Carey.

There are a few who genuinely can pull off the hat trick i.e. be good at both like David Bowie.

Then there was Madonna who, until finally giving up after Swept Away, was the Jason Voorhees of musicians who become shitty actors. Again, most give up after getting burned once, but for the longest time, no matter how many flops she starred in (which would inevitably become pop culture punchlines), Madonna kept coming.
