I'm kind of with the people who are like, "Is it depression?" especially when you say "I can't emotionally engage with it even if I want to." If it's the kind of thing where when you were younger, you could get immersed/emotionally invested in stories and characters very similar to what you're being recommended now, it might not be that everything nowadays is crap and more like you're too emotionally numb or stressed out to get into fiction right now.

If it's the case that you CAN get into things, but it's just that the stuff you're being recommended is low-quality or isn't to your tastes, but older stuff (that is still new to you) is more your jam, then it's probably just a case of your taste being out of step with your friends' and with current trends. You probably just need to stop taking recs from your friends in order to decide what to read/watch next and find other people who can give you recs more in line with your tastes, or do some exploration on your own. Something being popular and exciting a lot of people in your friend group isn't the same as it being good or worth checking out. Things are popular for a reason but it may not be the same reasons as what you're looking for in ficiton.
