I too am curious. OP makes it seem like a common grudge but clearly we are reading different scifi and fantasy genres because it is honestly not something i have ever noticed.

The first thing that came to mind is how many fantasy books that have coffee, but call it something else.

My mind is filthy, I was assuming it was a euphemism for a hardened phallus.
