ehhh for me it's that I already know the lore, backwards and forwards, I don't need to soak in a poem about Earendil to remember his part in the First Age. BUT...I never skip Tom Bombadil, because his entire dialogue (except maybe two lines of exposition) are in the same rhythm as his songs. It's brilliant. Even when he's just talking about beds and dinner, it can all be chanted to the same rhythm as "ho Tom Bombadil." I love him.
