Wasn't there for the seventies, but I was there for the eighties. I'm with a friend--the aesthetics and the music and some of the culture was great, but everything else sucked.

I remember the 90s very well, and while a lot of that sucked too, I feel like it was overall more hopeful than where we are now. Can't tell if that's a result of being an adult or a result of the world going to shit, though, honestly.

Things were a lot more hopeful before 2001, I can say. Not that it would be the only reason things are so messy now.

Are we sure this isn't rosy retrospection kicking in?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-21 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No, "we're" not sure. I'm sure.

Saying that an era felt hopeful isn't the same as claiming it didn't have its own share of problems.

Recalling an era feeling hopeful can still be rosy retrospection. Memory is plenty fallible, and how one felt or feels is rather vulnerable to this.

The funny thing is, I'm not telling anyone else that their experience or their memory of the same era is wrong. But YOU keep trying to convince ME that MY account is wrong, because... why? Pride? You have to be right? You have a different account of things? What a bizarre fixation.

The verbiage I'm seeing is very similar to the language used in memes that evoke memories of the past (touched on in https://www.snopes.com/news/2019/10/01/usa-facebook-page-ukrainians/?fbclid=IwAR14ZtAOZrQuk_4zpBtDLZjaEOOP55ga6pbZschB2bFu_H7yKNwlhjn7KMQ). Such memes are built to trigger rosy retrospection, a logical fallacy that is horrifically underdiscussed.

"Rosy retrospection" is not a logical fallacy, it's a cognitive bias. I suggest you learn the difference before going off about it.

Also, I'm not talking about memes. Once again, I'm talking about MY experience and what I remember. You are not listening, so there's no point in continuing this conversation.
