my feelings are not mixed: child labor is bad*, and broad access to children by people they don't know and can't consent to isn't good either.

*people always bring up like farms, and like...if the farm is not solely about sustaining your home or community, but legit about having a business, no i don't think children should be working there either.

Yeah, I grew up in a farming area and live in a different farming area now. There are farming families who balance things well but there are a lot more who work their kids hard (to the extent of failing at school because farming is more important, meaning they can never get out) and there's a kid killed in a farm accident every few years. Doing lighter work alongside your parents? Fine. Doing a full days labour most days, being asked to do dangerous jobs and being taken out of school at peak times? Not fine.

yeah, like gaining skills and knowledge is great and useful. being shunted into a profession is questionable parenting.

I think teenagers having a job is good and I think that all teenagers should have a job to teach them responsibility and an understanding of money.

But there's a big difference between a kid working a few hours after school/on the weekend for spending money and a kid being forced into something.

from an admittedly leftist US perspective, i would actually disagree that a teenage job necessarily does any of that, and what teenagers tend to learn through jobs is largely dependent on their circumstances at home and replicable through work that doesn't encourage seeing being disrespected and exploited as a fair exchange for being able to live. like all my teenage jobs taught me is that way too many customers do not see service workers as completely human and that some men will delight in you having to have a public face so that they can creep on you without you getting mad. i don't think the helplessness of that power dynamic is a great thing to teach!
