I think you're dismounting that fandom spaces are roughly divided by gender. Female dominated spaces (which usually have more production of relationship focused fanart/ fanfiction) have tonnes of m/m content because [insert decades long discussion about why women like slash here].

Male dominated spaces [which I'll say typically focus more on general fanboying, non-relationship focused meta and character based fanart] have a lot of fanboying of male characters, amd bashing of female characters, but there is also a looooooot of obsession over sexy female characters.

To summarise: AFAB fandom spaces don't whump or woobify female characters nearly as much as male characters because they also aren't as interested in writing romance/smut about female characters. AMAB fandom spaces in contrast are obsessed with the waifus they want to bang.

TL;DR: Yes, sexism is at play, but it should not be discounted that a lot of character focus is about who the fans want to bang.
