He did, and there was a tremendous amount of female-focused fic in that fandom. Though I think a good part of it is just having a lot of female characters in medium-to-major roles. So many media properties have men outnumbering women 3-1, and even when there's multiple women they're often kept apart (or are related to each other and there's not *that* many incest shippers outside Sam/Dean).

I see your point and somewhat agree. But personally I dont care about reading female focused fic because I don't care about reading fic too close to home, so to speak. Having male characters gives me a little distance

That being said I do love to watch shows with awesome ladies, I just don't do fandom for those shows.

Same! I love watching movies and tv about awesome women, there are not enough of them! But I don't do fandom for them cause, yeah, too close to home. I'm mostly in fandom for the porn, emotional or otherwise. I'm also aroace, so I won't want to be reading about anything that could be even close to hinting about a relationship/sex with anyone close to being me. No, thank you.

Agreed, I think the same for POC and Queer characters as well. I understand where some squeamish comes from. But the fun of fictional characters (to me) is that I can just throw them against the wall, and if I can't do the same to some characters, then why would I stick with them instead of the character I can do this with.

Having now seen it twice, I'm troubled by this, but I have to think about why.

Men want to see other men in fiction, even men getting whumped. They rarely want to see women. But women also want to see men, and don't want to see women. Is it really about the distance, or is it about how our society views women; and the fact that even women are taught to value men more highly, to find them more relatable?

Lmao man, so true about antis. They complain about how unpopular female characters are, but they themselves don't seem to like any of them! They're the ones creating the "anti-female character" blogs, writing long screeds about how problematic this-and-that woman is, how this-and-that woman should stop oppressing and APOLOGIZE to this-and-that man (for such sins as, say, getting upset when he betrays her. "She should be more understanding, the selfish, ungrateful cunt"), how such-and-such film/show would be soooo much better if it were just all the male characters and those terrible women with their stupid subplots were gone...

It's plausible deniability, is what it is. "If I declare that fandom is sexist, then no one can call me sexist!"

I've seen people rant about how there are no good female characters in fiction and then they proceeded to trash and tear down every single female character they encountered because she wasn't unproblematic enough for them? Because god forbid that a female character have any sort of flaws, especially not the exact same sort of flaws that they turn a blind eye to when they're in a male character!

I think there are plenty of good female characters, but I tend not to feel fannish about them.

This reminds me of something really interesting in a couple fandoms of mine.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Has lots of female characters with their own stories and development independent of male characters, yet fans will whine about how Araki "cant write female characters without sexualizing them"

Trigun: Has two main female characters who don't really serve much of a purpose to the story, but the fandom will endlessly gush about them and talk about how they desperately want to see more content of them.

The biggest reason that male characters are more popular than female characters in transformative fandom is because people in transformative fandom, on the whole, are more attracted to men than to women. Period.

The second most important reason that male characters are more popular than female characters is because there are generally more male characters and they get more screen time and plot significance.

Any other reasons beyond that pale in comparison, and aren't even worth mentioning

The other reasons are absolutely worth mentioning to people in fandom who watch their female faves get constantly shit on. In those cases, your first reason may apply, but the second certainly doesn't; and even if the first does, that doesn't excuse people behaving like misogynistic assholes, nor does it excuse the hypocrisy that tends to accompany it.

Yeaaaaaahhhh as someone who is legit attracted to women and whose first ship was Haruka/Michiru I really wish straight women/gay trans dudes/solely masc-attracted nb people/etc. stopped thinking they have to do performative Yuri Duty to cleanse their BL sins or something because it's not like it doesn't bleed through with every word that they're not really into it. Yep. As seen by there being overwhelmingly more fanfic/fanworks about female characters when the female characters are the stars and better written, like the aforementioned BSSM, Madoka, hell even something like Korra where F/F has by far and away the most fanfic because the fans legitimately have the hots for the main F/F ship even though it's a token half-nod at the end of the series because they characters themselves are complex and well-written and the stars of the show. People want to see themselves as the heroes and to desire things that are desirable, not smash two cardboard cutouts the writers see only as plot devices for their male cast members together into disinterested gruel to ward off yaoi impiety.

I think you're dismounting that fandom spaces are roughly divided by gender. Female dominated spaces (which usually have more production of relationship focused fanart/ fanfiction) have tonnes of m/m content because [insert decades long discussion about why women like slash here].

Male dominated spaces [which I'll say typically focus more on general fanboying, non-relationship focused meta and character based fanart] have a lot of fanboying of male characters, amd bashing of female characters, but there is also a looooooot of obsession over sexy female characters.

To summarise: AFAB fandom spaces don't whump or woobify female characters nearly as much as male characters because they also aren't as interested in writing romance/smut about female characters. AMAB fandom spaces in contrast are obsessed with the waifus they want to bang.

TL;DR: Yes, sexism is at play, but it should not be discounted that a lot of character focus is about who the fans want to bang.
