I am baffled by the background image. How is My Hero Academia the fourth biggest fandom? Almost on par with Supernatural? Was there some huge surge in popularity that I missed?

And how is video blogging RPF so big??? Is it all just Minecraft RP?

I feel split on this one. On one hand I agree that fandom shouldn't be a popularity contest - and goodness knows I've certainly seen a few people get focused on 'making' their fandom more popular.
On the other hand, I do have a nosy interest in statistics like this.

I'm not sure what the point here is with the use of that chart. With just a few exceptions, that chart is showing most of those fandoms were already really popular prior to 2022 and the new works in the past year or so are only a tiny percentage - and could have been created by anyone new OR old, so its not really showing that the noobs that are messing things up imo.

How rude! I mean, why would you want 50,000 new fanworks to read? The absolute nerve of people to get ideas from older fandoms and then write about them and then post them. It's almost like they're trying to join in on the fun. And everybody knows no one gets to join a fandom after it's been going for a while, nope, not even if they weren't old enough to join when it was first started. If anyone gets into some older media, they are out of luck for joining that fandom. That's just the way it works, doesn't it?

(Also, no one already in those fandoms gets to write anything past a certain point in time, I guess?)

Who gets to be in the fandom though? How many people are too many? Everyone thinks themselves and their friends aren't the annoying ones with the OOC headcanons and ridiculous ships, everybody else is doing fandom wrong! But they have to scroll past your art of their NOTP too, right? If you are feeling that way in big fandoms, taking a step back to focus on your own fic/art/AMVs/headcanons/cosplays/however you participate in the hobby, and chatting about it in smaller groups of like-minded fandom friends can be refreshing.

I actually feel you because one of my moderately small fandoms have got so fucking worse after becoming popular. For example one of prolific good meta writers was chased out of fandom for posting spoilers under cut with tags.
But small fandoms with one drama queen can get pretty toxic really fast.

this is a not a great graph to illustrate your point, at minimum you'd need a year by year increase and another graph to show some type of fandom growth stat as well (and perhaps define "popularity" with numbers).

Honestly, I envy people who can just info dump about their lives to strangers on the interwebs.

But that might be because I've had things weaponized against me by people I thought were friends or at least cool enough to NOT do that. And even if talking to strangers might make it happen less, there are too many trolls on the internet for me to feel safe doing so.

My husband is currently playing it through for the first time so I'm rehearing the dialogue a lot, and some of it is so overt.

I miss dubs in general, I don't understand or pretend to understand Japanese culture enough to pick up the nuance when it is just subbed. A good dub, they translate the nuance as well as the dialogue.
