I think "hate" is a strong word. I think he's good at playing a specific type of role, but it's a type I've seen plenty of and I'm not a fan of how this type tends to dominate the story. Also, if a person is a fan of Sherlock Holmes, this is a fun movie, but it's not very Sherlock Holmes overall, nor is RDJ much like Holmes.

I did like Jude Law as Watson, however.

But it's called Sherlock Holmes. Why wouldn't he dominate the story?

Probably because it's fine for Sherlock Holmes to be the main focus of the story, but RDJ is playing a similar character type to say, Tony Stark (brilliant genius with some not so great quirks that are forgiven because he's a loveable rogue and also a genius), who doesn't really resemble the Arthur Conan Doyle character much at all.

personally, given the style of the original stories (Watson as narrator but feeling more like the actual MC) I always prefer a Holmes story that treats them at least as equal participants in the story. Sort of like how in LOTR, Frodo is technically the protagonist but most of the scenes with him and Sam, Sam's POV makes him the actual MC because of how it's written. I've never seen this movie but if Holmes dominates and Watson fades into the bg as a secondary character, it lacks the vibe of the original and I'm not into it.

I didn't feel like Watson was fading into the background in those movies.
