I think many people don't appreciate the fact that there are a lot of religious extremists in Israel. Most people's experience of Judaism is with the more moderate, secular kind; they don't know that there are really hardline Jewish people out there who give fundamentalist Christians a run for their money, and a fair lot of them live in Israel.

I think this particular iteration of the conflict has changed some tunes, however. I have a few Jewish friends who very much held that it was anti-Semitic to criticize Israel, or at least that it was "up to Jews" to decide whether it was anti-Semitic or not, and non-Jews shouldn't be involved in the conversation at all. They have stated in the past month that they no longer hold this view.

Every religion has fundamentalist extremists. Heck, atheism does too for that matter. It is almost like humans as a species really like finding excuses for doing terrible things.

AYRT

Oh, absolutely. But people also tend to tell themselves, "this group over here is different," for one reason or another. Unfortunately, that's not the case. All groups are comprised of humans, so all groups have the potential to be extreme, and all groups have the potential to do terrible things.

If it wasn't for the religious extremist Jews, Israel wouldn't be a Jewish homeland and would be overrun with Muslims. They'd be dhimmis again.
